Inspired by 1980s Japanese manga and idol record covers, KYNE is known for his portraits of women with cool, composed expressions. His work featured in Ukiyo-e in Play is a refreshing indigo woodcut print—quintessentially “KYNE blue.” The simplicity of his lines and shapes highlights the natural beauty of materials such as washi paper.

KYNE: Paintings For The Drop
New York Selling Exhibition
On View in New York, Seoul, and Tokyo
Online through 15 September
KYNE’s signature style features women with direct gazes and tightly shut mouths, creating a sense of emotional distance and introspection. These figures are central to his work, maintaining a clear boundary between their world and the viewer’s. Influenced by the traditional Japanese painting technique Nihonga, the visual elements of 1980s record jackets, and the black-and-white style acquired from graffiti, KYNE’s art combines precision and flatness, resulting in his iconic female figures.

Sold Out: KYNE

On the heels of the first anniversary of Dropshop, KYNE’s Drop and PhillipsX selling exhibition are sold out on both platforms.

KYNE situates his iconic figures within the metropolitan landscape of New York City, and by an equally iconic landmark: the Manhattan Bridge. KYNE’s ever-changing approach to artmaking has prompted multiple partnerships with Japanese streetwear brands and even Takashi Murakami.

In his debut collaboration outside of Japan, DROPSHOP x KYNE also includes two additional portraits: one in pink and one in orange — that will bring KYNE’s style to the forefront of the American art market. The original paintings were offered through PhillipsX.
