Karate was, and always will be, the best thing I ever started. But everything must come to an end.
This is not a post I ever wanted to make.
Over a year and a half ago, I suffered a neck injury that my medical team and I managed for around six months. Then, in October 2025, an MRI confirmed a C6/C7 left disc protrusion with potential impingement of the left C7 nerve root. After many appointments with doctors, practitioners and spinal specialists, I have been told that my karate goals will have to change.
That news is heartbreaking, and I am still coming to terms with it.
Initially, I was very hopeful that I would get back to normal, but the pain and symptoms continue to come back. When the pain settles, I try to return to karate training and instantly the love and desire to improve reignites. Then that hope is taken away again when my symptoms inevitably flare up, to the point where even getting out of bed becomes a challenge. We had hoped that the disc would reabsorb, as it often does after a year, but so far I have not been one of the lucky ones.
The next stage of treatment is a nerve block injection with corticosteroids, with the aim of settling the pain and allowing me to live day to day without symptoms. The focus has shifted from return to sport to return to normal life. As an athlete who has dedicated his life to elite sport, that is a tough pill to swallow.
However, I do not want decades of experience to go to waste. I am excited to see what the future holds in coaching and supporting athletes to achieve their goals.
For now, karate, thank you for everything you have given me. The experiences were unmatched. The lessons shaped the man I am today. And the people I have met showed me humanity at its best: generous, hardworking, and kind.
I am grateful to everyone who followed and contributed to my journey.

Challenge prize winner for the 2025 season at Stinchcombe hill club golf for best net score. ⛳️ 🏆
I shot a 79 during a medal comp/centenary qualifiers giving me a nett score of 58 back in June 2025! This was my first time ever breaking 80!
Thankfully, my handicap had come down since (now 12HCP), with the mission to get to single figures soon! 📈🏌🏻♂️
Stinchcombe hill golf club is the first golf club I have ever joined and I have been a member since April 2025 - the people and the course are amazing! 10/10, would, and do, recommend! 💯
Sadly, a neck injury has forced me to change my focus from competitive karate to a non-contact sport, and that’s where golf has come in! I hope to get back on the mats one day, but for now, I’m just enjoining being a white belt in a different sport.
Our study explored how different neck strength training approaches affected neck strength in female rugby players. Neck strength is a potential mitigator of concussion and an under-researched area in women’s sport.
We found that specific, dynamometer-based isometric training improved strength significantly more than self-directed methods, which are often recommended in men’s rugby but failed to improve strength in female participants in our study.
It was an honour to share this work on such an international stage and to contribute to the growing conversation around athlete safety — especially for women.

The beauty of Ireland, from its stunning landscapes to its warm and welcoming people, is truly unique. Growing up at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, surrounded by green fields and a beautiful sea, I was always captivated by Ireland’s beauty. Moving away from Ireland has made me realise to never take these views for granted.💚⛰️

A surreal experience at the 2024 Global Cup, South Carolina, USA! I had the opportunity to share the tatami with some amazing athletes, and I really look forward to doing that again - it was a real honour.
Thank you so much for everyone’s support in the crowd, I heard you all! 📣 After a winning a bronze in my individual category (-67kg 🥉), I knew I had to dig deep, and correct some mistakes.
I am proud of the work I have done in the build up to this event, and I am proud of how I was able to pick myself up and execute a game plan.
After nearly 6 months of working through an injury, I am so happy to be back on the tatami - it feels good! Back to the dojo next week and straight back to work! 📈
