Children first develop implicit memory before they develop explicit memory. This means their body remembers what happened around them and to them before than can ever recall memory (images, events). Was it safe? Was it predictable? Was it loud? Was it chaotic? This becomes their world view - how their brain and body are wired. It asks Is my world safe? Can I trust it? The first few years are critical in providing responsive caregiving. Create calm, create predictability - in your response. Sure routines are supportive and helpful but most important is your response. Can they trust you are there for ALL their emotions and it’s ok?
Beautiful example of supporting this little one through this accident. Did you see the moment when she wasn’t sure she was going to get in trouble or not and Dad said “it’s ok, you didn’t do anything wrong, it’s just an accident. I’m here.” If he responded negatively to this little girls meltdown would have continued on and on but he co-regulated, supported her emotionally and they moved on.

Babies stress response system (how on edge or relaxed they will be at baseline, how they handle stress, overcome adversity, etc) begins developing in the womb. Very young children (usually under 3-4) do not have explicit memory (the ability to recall images and pictorial events) but they do have implicit memory where their body remembers. They remember the sensations of the experiences. A great read: “The Body Keeps the Score”

Whether the threat is real or just perceived, the brain reacts the same way.

That means one person might feel totally safe, while another feels triggered, just based on how their nervous system is wired.

🌱 The good news? Our bodies can learn over time that we’re safe.

To a toddler, not getting their favorite toy can feel like a real threat. Their brain isn’t trying to be difficult - it’s still learning how to manage big emotions.

✨ Instead of “What’s wrong with this child?”
Try: “What does this nervous system need to feel safe?”

Here’s a simple 3-step response you can try:

Acknowledge their feelings:
💬 “I know you really wanted that toy.”

Offer a replacement behavior with a choice:
💬 “We have to wait, but you can play with X or Y while we wait.”

Expect the meltdown might still happen.
That’s okay. Tune into your nervous system, stay grounded, and keep validating.

Lastly, always phrase things as if it is their choice. "do you want to push the cart or sit in the cart?" Praise, praise, praise for choice!

🌱 Over time, children learn emotional regulation and boundaries through the consistency of how you show up.

You’re not just managing behavior-you’re building a nervous system that knows safety. 💛

Hi there! I'm Jenna and founder of, professor, early relational health practitioner and mother. A few things about me.

🌿I am a mother to a beautiful daughter.

🌿Professor of infant and early childhood mental health and early childhood education.

🌿I am from Virginia and North Carolina. Lived in California for 7 years (San Diego & San Franciso!) I have lived in Seattle, WA 10 years!

🌿 I have a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Special Education with an emphasis on Infant Mental Health, and a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology.

🌿 I have a 5 year-old golden retriever named Willow Kai who has taught me so much about life and love!

🌿 I am married to my partner Zach, who I am ever so grateful for, he is such a light in my life. We enjoy slow mornings with our pups - Willow and Arlo.

🌿 I love being active on or around water & mountains. Love photography, optimizing wellness. Dabbling in new ventures, learning.

🌿 I value simplicity, connection, intentionality, purpose, playfulness and depth in my life. I also value discomfort, and growth.

🌿 After over 15 years in the field of early childhood working in home settings, clinics, hospitals, and schools that I realized there wasn't a preventative program out there that focusing on supporting emotional health in the early years. Experiencing and knowing firsthand the benefit early relationships has in shaping brain architecture, promoting healthy stress responses, and reducing the risk of developmental delays, mental health disorders, and even chronic illnesses later in life, I knew I needed to be a part of moving this needle forward as I believe prevention is better than treatment.

🌿 I started Roots about 4 years ago with the intention to increase access to early childhood supports and empower and equip parents and caregivers with tools to support emotional regulation & connection in children from birth to age three, because every child deserves to be seen, heard, and understood.

🌿 This is not only a passion project but a response to family voices, systems gaps and community need.

🌿 That's a little bit about me, what about you? What brings you to our page?
Research has proven again and again, the more we respond to babies needs, quickly and consistently, the more curious and independent they will become.

🌿 In a survey conducted by Zero to Three - 47% of adults think you can spoil an infant under three months of age if you pick them up every time they cry. 47%! The research proves again and again the exact opposite. In fact, in one particular study, children’s cries that are met consistency and promptly in the first quarter of the first year, cry less and sleep better the rest of the year. The study also found that babies whose cries elicit responses tend to develop into independent, confined to and self-reliant children.

🌿 This has so much to do with how the brain is wired. So respond away and know you building a healthy brain!
