1: Currently, my winning portfolio about the natterjack toad is part of the exhibition at, a popular interactive science museum in The Hague. This exhibition opened on 24 April 2026 and will be on display for a year. It was an important event to celebrate this great achievement with my proud mother. This moment takes place almost exactly 23 years after my father passed away, and he is deeply missed at times like this. I am sure he would have been very proud; nature photography might have been a shared passion.
2, 3, 4 & 5: Last Saturday, a full-page interview about my winning portfolio was published in the newspaper, along with an online version. The interview covered the process, my career and vision as a wildlife photographer, the beauty and importance of the natterjack toad, and why the species deserves to be protected. A huge honour!
6: Natuurfotografie Magazine dedicated a full page to my winning portfolio.
7: A proud ‘trophy shot’ in front of my photo, which was awarded ‘Highly Commended’ during the exhibition opening.
I received many compliments, kind words, and congratulations both in person and online. This means so much to me! Thank you!

The caterpillar of the spurge hawk-moth feeds on spurge in the coastal habitat in the Netherlands. The spurge hawk-moth (Hyles euphorbiae) overwinters as a pupa, emerges as the adult in spring, and begins egg laying about the time leafy spurge begins to bloom. During the larval stage they have to consume loads of leafy spurge before they enter the soil where they pupate.
The photo is part of an outdoor exposition as you can see on the second photo (by ).

[EN] Besides my winning portfolio in the Green Camera 2026 contest I had more success. My photo of a Natterjack toad in amplexus (embracing) achieved a highly commended in the category “Animals” (mammals, amphibians and reptiles). This is the nature photography contest for the Netherlands and Belgium. To ensure a level playing field, only photos captured within these two countries are eligible for entry. Originally this photo was part of the portfolio. However, this photo was a continuation of some of my older images. I wanted something new and that is how the third photo of the portfolio came to be. This image was different, also focuses on the eyes and it was a better fit for the portfolio. Sometimes, tough choices have to be made.

With almost 25,000 submissions this year Glanzlichter is a very prestigious international nature photography competition. I feel privileged to travel the world and photograph many different amphibian and reptile species. However, being awarded in this prestigious international competition with a Common toad (Bufo bufo) makes it extra memorable.
I also want to congratulate all other awarded photographers!

Like many other “digger bees” in the Anthophora genus, they are known for burrowing into the soft mortar of old stone houses or traditional clay and adobe walls.

In the Amazon, insects and spiders are often hijacked by parasitic fungi that control their every move. This particular tarantula fell victim to a mind-controlling fungus known as Tarantula cordyceps (Cordyceps caloceroides). The fungus infects spiders through spores that attach to and penetrate the body, gradually taking control of the host’s behavior.
As the infection progresses, the “mind-controlled” spider is compelled to move to a microclimate favorable for the fungus’s growth. Meanwhile, the fungus feeds on the spider’s innards until the final stage of its life cycle. At this point, the spider moves to a specific location where it dies slowly.
Several days after the spider dies, the fungus’s fruiting bodies, or mushrooms, emerge from its shriveled corpse, turning it into a launchpad from which the spores can spread. These spores travel widely and infect new spiders.
This photo made it into the top 10 of its category in the contest and was nominated for the People’s Choice Award. Unfortunately, the photo didn’t get enough votes to be awarded. I want to congratulate all the awarded photographers!
