There’s something captivating about the warmer expression of colors in the summer. While I’m always trying to highlight & accentuate natural colors in my work, everything from the harsh summer sunlight to the clouds & hazy skies seem to provide an irreplaceable atmosphere. This is especially true for a handful of images I made of Tokyo Skytree - some of my favorites to date.

Fuji-san is only visible for 70-80 days each year, and that visibility drops dramatically in the summer. Heat haze, clouds, and rain can all obscure the view. So, as someone who loves photographing Mt. Fuji, my summer frames are some of my most treasured. They may not bring the most color or contrast compared to the Spring sakura or Fall momiji, but to me, they’re important memories of rare, fleeting moments.

One of my first summer views was at Lake Saiko for a hazy sunset. Although not crystal clear, Fuji-san’s silhouette was proudly visible to myself and the few others I shared this view with.

On a brutally hot summer day, I ventured out to Fuda-no-tsuji Pedestrian Bridge in Minato City, Tokyo, to take in one of my favorite views of Tokyo Tower. The street below and adjacent buildings provide the perfect frame and lines right down to the Tower.

Outside of the composition, there’s something about the complementary colors of the surrounding buildings that adds a vintage, filmic, and almost painterly feel to this image. That’s probably why it’s become one of my favorite images of Tokyo Tower.

As the calendar turns to June, it feels right to start sharing more images from summer. While summer in Japan is known for being (at times) unbearably hot and humid, it’s also a time of great celebration - with festivals aplenty and an atmosphere unlike the other seasons.

One of my first moments of magic in summer was the Ueno Summer Festival, held annually in Ueno Park, Tokyo, starting the second week of July and running for about a month. As a part of the festival, thousands of wind chimes are hung by the park’s Shinobazu Pond. Paired with the lotus blossoms in the morning, it’s quite the scene, and one I’d highly recommend enjoying for yourself.

There’s something about Fuji-san with pink flowers that just feels like the ultimate spring combination. Although I missed the somei yoshino cherry blossom season in Kawaguchiko, I was blessed with some incredible blooms almost everywhere else around the Fuji Lakes. Most of the late blooming varieties were the weeping kind, plus somei yoshino in Yamanakako, which bloom later due to the cooler temps there.

One spring afternoon around Kurashiki’s Bikan Historical Quarter. After my first trip to Kurashiki in the fall, I knew I wanted to come back and experience the spring scene as well. While there aren’t tons of cherry blossom trees, the few by the canal, along with the overall atmosphere, made for a nice visit.

Kurashiki is under 20 minutes from Okayama Station on the local San-yo Line, and the Bikan Historical Quarter just another 15 minute walk away.

Memories from a rainy day at Kitakami Tenshochi Park in central Iwate Prefecture. I visited last year as a day trip from Morioka City, which is about a 45-minute train ride away on the local Tohoku Line.

Although it would have been nice to see this peak scene with blue skies, I still found a few frames I liked - from the little details to capturing the scale of the scene.

Depending on where you view Fuji-san from, its facade or face can look rather different.

After circling this magic mountain for years, I’ve come to find the Shizuoka Prefecture + Fuji City facade is one of my favorites - it’s sharp, vertical & textured, giving Fuji-san more of a raw, volcanic feel.

Compare this to the pillowy snowcap of the Kawaguchiko facade or the extra wide, sloped Yamanakako facade and I think you’ll start to understand what I mean.

Another frame from Hiroshima, albeit a more solemn one. The Peace Park and the riverfront area by the Dome are great places to stop, take a deep breath, and reflect. I particularly like blue hour here - when the tour buses have gone, the boats have stopped, and the city lights begin to trickle on in the background.

I try visiting at least once a year, and this time around, the scene was elevated by the cherry blossoms.

This year, I was treated to the perfect spring day for a walk around Hiroshima. With the city only just starting to shed its peak sakura petals, and blue skies abundant, even the everyday scenes were elevated to something magical.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a complete visit to Hiroshima without a look at the castle or my favorite little koi spot.
