'Chalices' (March 2026, 178cm x 93cm) was drawn underwater while scuba diving at Coral Bay, Western Australia over a two week period. I chose this magnificent colony of a Montipora species to draw for its spectacular series of overlapping plates and whorls, forming chalice shapes.

The colony was thriving and home to an abundance of small fishes, juveniles and adults constantly feeding on the various small invertebrates and algae growing on the undersides of the chalices and on the garden of Sargassum weed which surrounds this colony.

This year, 12 months after a severe bleaching event along the Ningaloo Reef, I found profuse growth of Sargassum and strong growth in those corals which survived the bleaching.

Here I am back in Coral Bay once again. It's very hot, but no surprises there.

The boat slid into the water after a long layup without any problems, and after four dives I've checked out a few of the sites I know well and seen how they were affected by last year's coral bleaching. Fortunately, not quite as badly as I had feared.

It's difficult to say for sure, but the change in some areas is not much more than what you might normally see after the passage of a year. Some colonies of coral have completely died, others have grown substantially. However a few species seem to have disappeared almost completely which is worrying.

Sharing a few pictures here - will share more as I visit other sites and settle back into the daily life in my Coral Bay camp.

Redblotched Wrasse taking centre stage for the Poissons d'Australie exhibition at the Natural History Museum of Nantes in 2015. The exhibition took you on a journey to the Indian Ocean, featuring thirty of Roger's works alongside 16th - 19th century etchings contained in books rarely displayed in public. The show was a great success, showing the evolution of natural history illustration and bridging the gap between art and science.
