Big day in rock n roll history.
Happy birthdays to the King, Elvis Aaron Presley born Tupelo, Mississippi
& Mr Ziggy Stardust, David Bowie born London, England.
Bowie considered Presley a hero and a cultural touchstone. The King’s image was a major influence on Bowie’s stage personas and visual style (i.e. the Aladdin Sane lightning bolt inspired by Elvis’s TCB logo).
The two icons shared a manager at RCA records. In the mid-70s, after hearing Bowie’s demos, Presley considered having Bowie write songs for him. “Golden Years” was penned with him in mind, but rejected. It would go on to be a major hit off Bowie’s album Station to Station.
Dwight Yoakam revealed that Presley called Bowie six months before his death, asking him to produce his next album, he died before the album would come together.
When Presley died, Bowie was visiting a Maasai encampment in West Kenya. On return to his hotel, he read the news in the Nairobi Times. He kept the headline page until the end of his life.
The audio attached was captured during Bowie’s performance at the Gorge Amphitheatre outside George, Washington concert on August 16, 2002 - the 25th anniversary of the Presley’s death.
