I collect old tins and found vessels, objects that once held something else entirely. Cigarettes, pastilles, crayons and much more. Their original contents are long gone, but the vessels remain, waiting.
I paint eyes into them, giving them someone new to hold. Each one becomes a small act of safekeeping, a gaze nestled inside something that has outlived its original purpose and found another.
This painting gathers them together in the dark, quiet and held.
I’m delighted to have this piece included in ‘In Good Company, a group exhibition curated by celebrating connection, visibility and the power of woman artists supporting each other.

The Lover’s Eye tradition began in the late 1700s, tiny painted eyes hidden inside jewellery and keepsakes. A secret portrait. A way of being seen without being known.
I think about this every time I paint a stranger’s eye into an old spoon or a found tray.
The tradition hasn’t ended. It just found me.
