It’s been a lovely day In my studio today working on a new project. I spend all year encouraging other people to be creative… but summer? Summer is when I get to be the artist again.
This sculpture began as a teaching idea.

I wanted my Year 7 students to experience drawing a sculpture from life, so I reached out to the brilliant sculptor Nic Fiddian-Green to ask if he might be willing to lend us one of his studio pieces. Although I didn’t hear back, the idea stayed with me, so I decided to create my own horse head sculpture inspired by his extraordinary work.

This is not a copy, but a personal interpretation created as an educational resource for my classroom. It has become one of my favourite teaching tools, giving students the opportunity to study form, light and shadow from a real three-dimensional object.

A huge thank you to Nic Fiddian-Green for the inspiration. His monumental horse sculptures have had a profound influence on the way I think about form and simplicity.

And just like that, it’s finished!

After weeks of planning, creating, mounting and curating, our annual Summer Exhibition is finally ready to welcome visitors. This whistle-stop tour only offers a glimpse of the incredible work on display, but I couldn’t be prouder of what the children have achieved.

From Year 1 through to Year 8, every child has a piece exhibited, and the creativity, skill and enthusiasm shown throughout the school are truly remarkable. Seeing the exhibition come together and watching the children’s artwork transform the space has been such a rewarding experience.

A huge well done to all of our young artists. The exhibition looks fantastic, and their work shines from every wall. 🎨✨
Another fantastic course comes to an end! 🎨✨

Two of our lovely artists continued working on portrait projects, while the other two took on my newest course addition: ‘The Human Element – Adding Figures to Landscape & Seascape Paintings’. It was wonderful to see everyone experiment, build confidence, and discover new ways of approaching their work.

Over four Monday morning sessions (and 12+ hours of painting!), our artists explored the art of landscape and seascape painting in oils. Inspired by the methods of Winslow Homer, Cézanne, and Monet, we focused on composition, tonal structure, colour temperature, atmosphere, brushwork, and process-led painting rather than simply producing finished pieces.

As always, there was plenty of fun, laughter, encouragement, and some seriously beautiful painting along the way… and that includes you too, Jules! 🤣👏

📅 More course dates are now available for September and November.

It’s that time of year again… getting ready for our school’s annual Summer Exhibition next week. Here at Cranleigh Prep we pride ourselves with the fact that each child from Year 1 to Year 8 has a piece on show. It’s still early days and there’s a long way to go, but things seem to be taking shape nicely.
No reel I’m afraid. Just some paintings to share this time. After our recent trip to the Lake District I thought I’d share three of the watercolours I painted. We had amazing weather and I’ve got to say that Cumbria was looking at its finest!

The first two are of the same view from the northern end of Crummock Water, looking towards the Buttermere Valley with Haystacks in the background. Although they look quite similar these paintings are very different in size. One is around A3 while the other is A1. I’m interested to see if you can tell which is which?

The third painting is of Ennerdale, looking towards Angler’s Crag and Bowness Knott. It was our first visit to this magical and magnificent valley and I can’t recommend it enough if you love hiking through unspoiled wilderness with decent footpaths and fantastic scenery. If you’re lucky you might even spot the wild pigs!!
Just thought I’d share the process of my painting, ‘Guardian of the Lake’. My successful entry into the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation - Wildlife Artist of the Year to be exhibited at the Mall Galleries in September. I’m so thrilled and excited to have been selected as a finalist!

The painting is of ‘Harry’ the mute swan, a prominent resident on the 3.5 acre lake in Knowle Park, Cranleigh. Knowle Park is an accessible 60-acre country park and nature reserve in the heart of Cranleigh, featuring a lake, outdoor performance spaces and an amazing array of wildlife!

Knowle Park Trust does amazing work; protecting its biodiversity, and ensuring it remains a safe, welcoming, and accessible space for all members of the community to enjoy.
The little teabag robin has now been viewed over 6.2 million times.

So many of you asked how I painted it, so I’ve uploaded the complete paint-along tutorial to YouTube in two parts.

Perfect if you’d like to paint your own version.
If you like to relax with watercolour you can follow the link in my bio to download my video - Calm Watercolour. Four easy ‘no pressure exercises to help you over the fear of starting to create.
I started with a simple teabag mark — no plan, no pressure — just letting the colour wander.
When I turned the paper, a tiny robin appeared, waiting to be painted.
Art doesn’t always need a sketch or a goal.
Sometimes, it just asks you to slow down… and notice what’s
already there.
Would you try painting from a random stain like this?
