Pieces to love.

Our favorites, designed with some of Robert Indiana’s signatures. Inspired by a body of work that helped shape the pop-art movement.

As a self-proclaimed “painter of signs,” Indiana explored the power of abstraction and language in a highly original body of work. Inspiring a new take on the essentials we all know — and love.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that” - Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968).

Indiana dedicated his painting Love Rising (The Black and White Love) to Martin Luther King, Jr., who was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The 12-foot quadripartite painting, the largest of Indiana’s LOVE Walls, was first exhibited that same year, in the Museum of Modern Art, New York’s show In Honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. (October 31–November 3, 1968).

Interesting article published by Ursula Magazine about Martha Jackson’s gallery.

In June, 1960 Robert Indiana’s sculpture French Atomic Bomb appeared in the landmark exhibition New Media—New Forms I at the Martha Jackson Gallery, the first major showcase of current assemblage works. The artists exhibited include Jean Arp, Lee Bontecou, Claes Oldenburg, Jasper Johns, and Robert Rauschenberg.
Grass belongs to a series of small paintings made by Indiana between 1961 and 1962. An intimate concrete word composition, Grass illustrates Indiana’s verbal-visual approach to painting and is a direct reference to American poet Walt Whitman’s poetry anthology Leaves of Grass.

Whitman’s Leaves of Grass was first published in 1855. Focused primarily on the celebration of the individual self, the vastness and interconnectedness of the universe, and the democratic spirit of America, the title was a pun. In Whitman’s time, “leaves” was another name for the pages of a book and “Grass” was slang for literature considered minor or of little importance by publishers and critics.
