📌 Here are 5 things I wish I knew about Aurora hunting BEFORE I went to Lapland 🇫🇮

March 2026 is the last, best opportunity to witness the aurora borealis this decade -
And is the perfect time to book a trip to Finnish Lapland.

➡️ SAVE for your future Aurora hunting trip & follow for more Finland tips!

1. Despite popular rhetoric, the best months to see the Aurora are on the spring & fall equinoxes, not in the dead of winter. So the weeks around March 21st & September 21st are statistically best for seeing the Aurora. (You’ll also be visiting during shoulder season, so accommodation is more affordable and more available)

2. I assumed that if the Aurora activity was good, we would see the Aurora, but in reality you’ll have a hard time seeing without clear skies, good visibility to the north, and little light pollution.

3. I thought the Aurora looked like the photos to the naked eye. In reality, it takes very strong activity to see the bright green colour with the naked eye. It’s even more rare to see other colours like pink, red, and purple. It’s very handy to check for Aurora using long exposure on your phone, and bring a phone tripod to get steady photos of it.

4. The moon plays a big affect on how easy it will be to see the Aurora if it’s weak. If you have a full moon & weak activity, it makes it very hard to see. Of course, if you have strong activity, the full moon helps with taking portraits in front of it. However, best bet would be to avoid a full moon.

5. We read that statistically you can see Aurora activity 1 out of 2 days in Lapland, but that doesn’t account for how strong that activity is or cloud cover. Give yourself as many days as possible to see them!

Most importantly, it’s going to be challenging to see them yourself without a guide or a car.

We went on a tour with and HIGHLY recommend a tour with Alex! Photos are by too ✨

Is seeing the Aurora on your bucket list?

Some parts of Canada are closer to Europe than to Canada’s west coast.

Yep, Canada really is that big. We know more than anyone the appeal of travelling internationally over travelling domestically, however, we really do think every Canadian should have the opportunity to explore our own country.

British Columbia truly has such stunning and diverse landscapes. And the one’s we’ve shown only scratch the surface.

A deep dive into 2025 & our 4th year of full-time travel…

In 2022, we set out to full-time travel for 1 year, and never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined making it to our 4th year.

At the beginning of 2025, we felt ready to make this year our last year of full-time travel, but not without an epic bucket list trip around Asia first. In the summer, we announced the end of full-time travel, however in reality we kept travelling full-time just in Canada. (Our home country)

Despite visiting less countries than we did in 2024, we slept in over 20 more beds (from 68 in 2024 to 88 this year) which goes to show the pace we explored and how much we travelled & moved around once we got back to Canada.

We discovered how incredible pet sitting is for exploring Canada and we went all in (like we always do😂) and decided to do it full-time, which saved us so much money.

That, in addition to travelling Asia the first 6 months of the year, made 2025 our most affordable travel year to date.

We’re so grateful for the incredible experiences we had this year and will remember this year for the rest of our lives.

We’re not kidding… the more we explore BC, the more we’re in total awe of it.

Which destination would you be most excited to visit?

1. Princess Louisa Inlet, Sunshine Coast
2. Kootenay National Park
3. Telegraph Cove, Vancouver Island
4. Strathcona Provincial Park, Vancouver Island
5. The Sunshine Coast (in general) but especially all the stunning islands off it
6. Pemberton
7. Cape Scott Provincial Park, Vancouver Island
8. Purcell Mountains

The end of an era 🌎✈️

After 3.5 years, we have decided to end our full-time travel journey. At the start of the year, we decided it would end the summer of 2025, but a couple weeks ago, we decided to call it quits a bit early due to burn out & exhaustion. 2 weeks later, and we’re back in Canada. 🇨🇦

To summarize what full-time travel has meant for us is no easy task…

It opened our eyes to the beauty of this world and the people within it.
It held up a mirror to our privilege.
It magnified our gratitude.
It showed us true freedom.
It broke down our conceptions of the world and how we can operate within it.
It held back the curtain on alternative lifestyles and how we can choose to live.
It made everywhere feel like home.
Yet, it reminded us that there’s nowhere like home.

While we may no longer be full-time travelling, travel (domestically & internationally) will still be a constant in our lives & rest assured our helpful travel guides & travel inspiration posts are going nowhere. We have 3.5 years of travel wisdom & knowledge to share, and more time now to actually share it. 💛
