Before you come at me, don’t worry, I plan to add dimension back to the details. When doing a tan wash, you need to make sure all the old finish is removed otherwise you’ll still have random dark stain spots that pop through.
The trick after your tan wash to make those details pop again is to layer it with a stain or glaze.
But in the mean time, enjoy this satisfying time lapse 🤍

Shoutout to my neighbor friend who told me at school drop off today she saw this on one of our streets. You bet I ran over there and loaded it on up. Thank goodness for good friends and spacious mini vans.

There are many different ways, different products to use, this is just what I have found works for me. Take that for what it is.
Before I get started, comment BROYHILL if you’d like a list of all the products I’ve used sent to your inbox.
Okay! First a few important tips
1. Work in a well ventilated area
2. Use a respirator mask designed for chemicals
3. Dispose of stain rags properly
4. Follow dry and re-coat times on cans
Steps:
- Remove Hardware
- Scrape and sand old finish
- Use stripper for more delicate areas or curved arches
- Acetone and steel wool also works great for those arches
- Use Mohawk Walnut Epoxy putty to repair any missing chunks, gouges, chipped veneer etc.
- Sand repair smooth
- Apply 2 coats of Mohawk Medium Brown Wiping Stain
- Spray full coat of Mohawk Vinyl Sealer
- Use Mohawk Blendals and Grain Markers to blend and disguise. See my other reel on this tutorial. You can also use paints and powders.
- Spot Spray vinyl sealer on blend repairs to lock it in between coats
- Apply Mohawk Glaze in Raw Umber, wipe back
- Lightly spray Mohawk toner in Medium Brown American Walnut over area like trim that’s different wood color and to further disguise your repair blending. Only one light coat at a time. It’s easy to go too heavy or streaky. You can also add toner to your vinyl sealer but thats a whole other ball game.
- Apply Mohawk Pre Cat Lacquer in Satin. My video shows me spraying it out of an hvlp, but you can also do aerosol cans, more beginner friendly
- Fine Sand in between coats
- Clean hardware lightly. Extra fine steel wool works well
- Spray White Lithium Grease on metal tracks to help them glide smoother
Phew that’s the general gist! I’m sure I’m forgetting several steps and some purists may come at me, but hope this helps. Please know you can message me any time and I’m happy to help troubleshoot or answer any questions.

It tested me. It taunted me. But in the end I persevered and I couldn’t be more happy with how it turned out.
High: 44”w x 49.5”h x 19”d
Low: 66”w x 31”h x 19”d
$4200 for the set. Preference to sell together.
(2500 for low, 1700 for high)
Benefit of a set is you know for sure the finish matches. Every refinisher does things slightly different so you risk tone being off.

I had big plans for 2025, which didn’t quite come to fruition out of favor of a slower pace, other endeavors, and balanced time with family. So even though I didn’t become some mega content creator with brand deals, a bazillion pieces finished, and on and on….I wouldn’t trade a thing.
For what I did accomplish, I am dang proud. I got to create some really beautiful pieces. I got to help clients reimagine their family heirlooms and give them second life. I go to put down the phone more and stop chasing the social media rat race. I got to be more intentional with what I posted and what was authentic to me. Annnd I have a slew of inventory in my garage ready to be beautified in 2026, and clients waiting in the wing for their own customized furniture.
I can’t wait to see what’s in store. If you’ve been on this journey with me, thank you for being here. I appreciate you more than you know.
And of course couldn’t have done it without the best community of refinishers there is. The hype, advice, support, learning, sharing, etc…there isn’t another community like it.
Happy New Years everyone. Here’s to 2025. The best is yet to come!
