Opening today: Ed van der Elsken. Up Close. A true pioneer of street photography, Van der Elsken had an instinctive, deeply personal way of connecting with the people he photographed. Drawing from the complete work archive acquired by the Rijksmuseum and the Nederlands Fotomuseum in 2019, the exhibition traces all the key moments in his career - from his earliest days as an independent photographer to his deeply personal documentation of his own dying process. This is as close to Ed van der Elsken as you can get: well-known classics alongside never-before-seen photographs, contact sheets, personal letters, book designs, and film fragments.

For centuries, the Jan Roodenpoortstoren was a familiar feature of Amsterdam’s skyline. Originally built as part of the city’s medieval defenses, it was transformed into an elegant landmark in the early seventeenth century. Although the tower was demolished in 1829, its memory survives at the site where it once stood.

Melchior d'Hondecoeter (1636–1695) came by his love of birds naturally: both his father and grandfather were animal painters. He was one of the first artists to make bird paintings, creating compositions so vivid and dynamic that you can almost hear the twittering and fluttering of wings. 🐦⬛

A behind-the-scenes look at the making of the exhibition Fiep Westendorp, on view from 19 June in the two rooms of the Photo Gallery.
Jip and Janneke, Pim and Pom, Pluk van de Petteflet. Chances are you grew up with these characters, without ever knowing who drew them. This summer, the Rijksmuseum brings together some 150 original drawings by illustrator Fiep Westendorp: from early sketches to the illustrations that have stayed with generations of children.
Fiep Westendorp is on view from 19 June till 13 September.
The Fiep Westendorp exhibition is made possible in part by the Fiep Westendorp Foundation and the Brook Foundation through the Rijksmuseum Fonds.

It is not hard to guess what Louis Royer’s profession was. He holds a hammer in his hand, while various pieces of sculptor’s tools lie on the table beside him. Still unsure? Around him stand several of his own sculptures, including portrait busts and a figure of Christ. Charles van Beveren portrayed Royer relaxed and at ease in his own studio. Here we see a sculptor completely in his element! 🔨

Ferdinand Bol painted the sisters Margarita and Anna Maria Trip in an allegory of education. Margarita is shown as Minerva, the goddess of the arts and sciences, while her younger sister kneels beside her, eager to learn. In reality, Anna Maria was not taught by her sister, but by a private tutor. The Trip sisters lived with their family in a grand house in Amsterdam. This painting? It hung proudly above the fireplace. 🔥

Even museums need the occasional clean. From time to time, our paintings are carefully dusted by our conservators. Using a soft brush, they gently remove dust from the artworks. This time, it was The Threatened Swan by Jan Asselijn that was due for a clean.
