Here’s how I did it ⬇️
1️⃣ Stripping the old finish: I used a combo of carbide scraping and chemical stripper to get a bulk of the old finish off. Doing this saves me time later on with sanding! It’s a messy job but so worth it to bring out the natural wood grain.
2️⃣ Modernizing the base: I grabbed my jigsaw and cut off the curved details on the base to give it a cleaner, more modern look. It’s a simple change, but it makes a difference!
3️⃣ Sanding (and more sanding): Every surface got thoroughly sanded, starting with a rough grit and moving to finer grits to smooth everything out. Hand sanding was key for the details!
4️⃣ Neutral wood finish: I wanted to try something different with this dresser and opted for a warmer finish than my usual. I applied a diluted beige paint wash and followed that up with a coat of glaze. The topcoat deepened the colour and the grain popped even more!
5️⃣ Final touches: I loved the shape of the hardware but the colour just wasn’t the vibe. I cleaned, sanded, primed and applied a gold wax to each piece. I also cleaned out every drawer and finished with an orange-scented wax. 🍊

I love the details on these drawers! It makes a solid colour that much more interesting. I added the drawer liners for extra protection and a pop of colour inside.

For this solid maple table, I stripped the top and paint washed it with a light beige. Then I glazed it and sealed it up! I used a durable black enamel paint for the legs and apron. Totally forgot to take a before pic.

Paint washing is one of my favourite techniques for updating wood furniture! It surprisingly takes less time than painting the whole piece.

Finding and Filling Imperfections: White primer is fantastic for highlighting imperfections that I might otherwise miss. It allows me to fill in those flaws for a super smooth finish. Plus, primer itself can fill in shallow scratches, so there’s less for me to touch up!
Save Money: Primer is generally cheaper than paint! It enhances the color payoff and opacity of the paint, so if I can use one less coat of paint, that’s a win for my wallet!
