Now I am trying to write this sitting on my back deck in New Jersey with Miles blasting in the headphones trying to drown out the sound of jets making their final approach into Philadelphia, the leaf blowers and pressure washer of the gutter guy next door.
Also, Happy Birthday Miles.

I just booked another trip to Las Vegas for the first week of June to finish photographing a few key areas I want in the show, and to re-photograph and document the changes since I began working on this project five years ago.
The first image was from a series I made from the top of Fortification Hill, which I hiked on the first morning of my 2024 trip to get an elevated vantage point of Boulder Basin and the Hoover Dam. From there you can look across what was once Boulder Harbor and Las Vegas Marina, over the River Mountains that separate the lake from Las Vegas, and beyond to the Spring Mountains and Charleston Peak towering above the city.
The second image looks back across the lake toward Fortification Hill. I made this in January 2022 from a large sandbar that had formed near Callville Bay Marina when lake levels were around 1,066 feet — about 10 feet higher than they are as of this writing.
Then the rest are some iPhone pictures I videos made along the way...

When I was in Death Valley in 2020 I was really struggling with how to approach photographing in these canyons.
Then I put the viewfinder into the wide 65x25 mode and time and space became really ambiguous and it all started to resonate (and would eventually turn into my Still Small Voice series).
I tried to move away from that format on the next two trips for a couple of different reasons, but something about it stuck. I'm going back over some of the work from the past few years to print for a small conference later in the week and pretty excited to see how this fits the other work in the series.
I made this as part of a series of captures for a photogrammetry-based 3D model of this granite canyon wall. I haven't gotten to that yet, but when I was editing some other pictures last week I ended up selecting a few of these to put into an 8x20 format as bit of an homage to Michael A. Smith and his sonograph inspired work from the late 1970s-90s.
What I didn't know until this afternoon is that the phone can now turn single images into low-relief 3d models and spatial renders (see the last in the series...)
I was mostly interested in hiking up Fortification Hill to get an elevated vantage point to photograph the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead's Boulder Basin. Then I turned around and saw this instead. Often when I'm photographing in this kind of bright light I don't see the details as much as feel the space and what resonates—like giving up control to something greater. I didn't know until I got home and began editing pictures from that trip, that the mountain on the horizon was Avi Kwa Ame, Spirit Mountain, the place where Yuman creation began and one of the most sacred spaces in the Southwest.
That mountain sits at the heart of a 506,000-acre national monument co-managed by the BLM, the National Park Service, and a tribal advisory council where Indigenous nations hold the majority — the Fort Mojave, the Hualapai, the Quechan, and more than a dozen others with ties to this landscape going back more than 10,000 years.
Landscapes like this are under pressure from every direction. Senator Mike Lee tried to sell off millions of acres of it last year and was only stopped by a rare bipartisan outcry. The Blue Ribbon Coalition and similar OHV lobbying groups spent years fighting Endangered Species Act protections for the threatened desert tortoise — and the BLM let them, until a federal court stepped in last month and ordered the closure of 2,200 miles of off-road routes in the western Mojave.
Now Steve Pearce, a man who wrote to Congress that the federal government should sell off its vast land holdings to reduce the deficit, is up for confirmation as BLM director today. The deficit he was worried about was caused by nearly $5 trillion in tax cuts (that flow overwhelmingly to wealthy donors) compounded by $170 billion in new DHS and ICE spending tucked into the same "One Big Beautiful Bill" that quietly directed the BLM to accelerate timber sales and open millions of acres to coal leasing.
Call your senators. Tell them to vote NO on Sell-Off-Steve.

The penstock's Art Deco ornamentation reflects New Deal optimism—built during the depths of the Great Depression with the belief that public works could be both beautiful and functional. The spillways flanking the dam are a different kind of sad optimism, and were engineered to handle overflow when Lake Mead exceeded full pool at 1229 feet. They were last used in 1983 when the Glen Canyon Dam verged on catastrophic failure, and may never see water again.
The eight major reservoirs above Lake Powell, plus Powell and Mead themselves, would all need tens of millions of acre-feet restored before overflow becomes a possibility. Over the past 25 years, the Colorado River has averaged only 12.5 million acre-feet annually—5 million fewer than the optimistic and misleading data (the 20 wettest of the past 1200 years) that was used to establish the Colorado River Compact and design the Hoover Dam.
