Margot is our newest special needs baby. She is a tiny little one-month-old Alpine who was born with a cleft palate.

Last week we were contacted about this darling little girl. She needs a level of care the family wasn’t able to provide her long term. Although she doesn’t fit the usual realm of special needs babies that we take on, she needed someone who would give her a chance.
She has only gained 2lb since birth. Cleft palate ruminant babies have a very poor prognosis. Even if they get to where they are eating solid foods and weaned off milk, as ruminants who chew cud, there is always the risk of aspiration & pneumonia. We know the challenges cleft palate babies face but we wanted to give her a chance.
We are in touch with a sanctuary who specializes in cleft palate ruminant babies so we can learn from what they and their vet team have learned over the years. Baby Margot will of course see our vet team so we can be sure we are doing everything we can to give her the very best chance.
She has fit right in with the youngest baby crew and was center of the cuddle puddle last night.

Dr. P tubed Emmett with barium and then took X-rays every 15-20 min for over 2.5 hours. Doing so, we could watch the barium travel through his system to see if there were any abnormalities. If you’ve been following us for awhile, you may remember we did the same thing with Jordy a couple of years ago. Jordy’s X-rays showed an issue and he had abdominal surgery. Emmett’s X-rays, thankfully, didn’t show any major abnormalities, no blockages, no foreign objects. Dr. P possibly saw some scar tissue that may be a result of Emmett’s previous serious illness a couple years ago. Our vet team will all review the X-rays but the good news is that either way, Emmett will not need surgery which is a huge relief.
This sweet boy definitely keeps us on our toes with all the issues he has had the past 6 years. He was so patient yesterday, he was rewarded with his favorite treat, bananas! 🍌

My counters are covered in bottles. Over half my fridge is milk for the babies. 16 hours of my day revolves around their feeding schedules. Its not as simple as feeding each X amount Y times a day, some handle bottle feeding better than others and you quickly learn who to adjust.
Babies are born into a world where everything is out to get them and their undeveloped immune systems. A mild winter and weather that cannot make up its mind, are the enemy. Sometimes babies bring guests to the party that really are terrible house guests to have, viruses, bacteria, coccidia. You are on high alert at all times prepared to evict said house guests should they arrive. Evictions aren’t always easy, they are stressful. Temperature checks, meds, cleaning, and worry. So much worry. There is decision fatigue, trying to figure out why a baby isn’t feeling well, what to treat for and what meds to use. Sometimes, even though I know the answers, I still call our vets because I just need someone else to say what to do.
This year, my approach to baby season, is accomplishing its goal. I am better surviving what is the cutest but often the hardest season. We’re still in the thick of it, our youngest babies aren’t even 3 weeks, but the overnight house baby stuff is put away. Our first group of babies are adopted. The second group is getting weaned. And the third group, especially this girl, have reminded me why we do this year after year, they’ve helped bring back the joy in baby season ❤️

Join our amazing volunteer crews, spend time outside getting a workout and getting lots of goat love. We are looking to add to our:
Monday shift: 10am
Wednesday shift: 9:30am
Saturday shift: 9am.
Shifts are generally 2.5 - 3 hours. We ask for a weekly or biweekly commitment for a minimum of 6 months.
Volunteering primarily includes cleaning the goat barns, cleaning and filling waters and managing goats who want to help with everything. The work is physical and fast paced and we work outside amongst the goats rain or shine. After chores are done there is always time to just hang out with the goats with an unbeatable view of Mt Rainier.

Rocky, our little fighter, is continuing to improve. Rocky came to us late one night a few weeks ago, so weak he couldn’t even hold his head up. Anemic from a shocking number of lice for a 5lb baby and suffering from untreated joint ill for a month, he was barely hanging on. But this kid has kept going.
After using 2 legs to get around for awhile, he finally started using his affected back leg and it has improved some with treatment. His front leg joint was destroyed by the joint ill, but he is starting to use it a bit. We stretch it daily and our hope is that if it doesn’t start to contract, he can avoid surgery on that leg.
He has integrated into our youngest baby group and moved out to the barn overnight last weekend. It’s so great to see him being a baby goat after everything he endured and survived 💙
