“This 1955 Ferrari 121LM was driven by Piero Taruffi at Mille Miglia and Le Mans in its first year and in the Mille Miglia he drove from Rome to Brescia at an average speed of 189 kph - a record that stands to this day. Thinking of that insane number sends shivers down my spine. The silver fox was clearly not normal.

When I visited the town on a location scout I saw the potential of this bend in the heart of this medieval hilltop village. I sensed that with the right narrative I could find the compositional balance that I yearned for.

There are many people to thank for making this vignette happen, including the local mayor who embraced my idea of recreating a historical moment in motor sport. We needed to work with the locals rather than circumvent them and each of them helped make this picture special. I wanted a mood that highlighted a zest for life, the value of long friendships and the energy that comes from collective excitement. All those would have been present in 1955, but it was two years later that tragedy struck and the Mille Miglia was discontinued for a period of 25 years.

We were necessarily greedy in our props on this set as we did not want to be lame. The trailing Ferrari is a 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza 0530. It is one of just 32 prototypes built by Ferrari; one of the most beautiful and valued Ferraris in existence. Then in a moment of logistical madness, but creative courage, we brought in a black stallion from Rome to form part of the crowd. We had heard that he could prance in an emblematic Ferrari brand way and could not resist it. Some will inevitably think this unlikely addition is a product of AI, which is why we now always have a film crew on set taking BTS. The stallion, which came from Rome, will also happily testify to his key role. Ironically the best way to combat the AI barbs is to allow third party recording on set, not ban it. The danger of AI makes film sets even more collegiate.

I think we did the heritage of Mille Miglia proud that evening. “

“Our lives are roller coasters — the most beautiful things in life achieved only after struggle, stops and starts, points of darkness and doubt, and brilliance as we come into the light of success.

Without that darkness, we would not understand the beauty of the light. Without deserts, we would not appreciate the stunning beauty of a single green tree. Without loss, we would not understand the depth of love.

But in this work, Collins emphasizes the largeness of the light compared to the dark — a reminder that our joys and blessings are so much greater than our hard times.

Yet there is a reason for the name Prelude.

It is an anticipation of what is to come, an appetizer to a much fuller banquet.

Our greatest joy is when we look forward, not back.

There is a reason that the windshield is so much larger than the rear view mirror. No matter what our successes have been, our collective impulse is to improve, to strive towards the next great challenge.

The more out of our comfort zone, the better. The hedge fund manager who turns his skillset to charity. The female pro tennis player who builds a tennis camp for young girls. The doctor who takes a break from private success to repair cleft palates and improve others’ lives.

What is your next chapter? What is the beautiful challenge you are about to create that is a mere Prelude to the joy you have already achieved?

Your future is so much brighter than the past, if only you let yourself be open to seeing it.

It is right in front of you — so much beautiful light to step into.”

“The raw and imposing facade of the Jerome Hotel has lorded over Aspen since the 1880s. Its size and ornate brickwork remind us that Victorian architectural ambition extended beyond New York and Chicago, reaching even remote mining communities 8,000 feet up in the Rockies.

The Jerome has witnessed much change in Aspen over 140 years: a tough blue-collar community evolved into a modest winter sports destination welcoming hipsters and artists as well as cowboy capitalists. Aspen then, of course, slowly grew into its role as the world’s most celebrated ski resort. It has lived more lives than most communities ever will.

The Jerome’s story is unique and it will no doubt continue to hold court long after we are all gone. It is the one historical constant the town can boast of, having hosted every conceivable archetype over its long life.

The hotel chooses not to judge, but if the
room walls could talk, there would be a large volume of stories to come from behind that grand brickwork facade. Not all guest behaviour at the Jerome has come from the highest ethical drawer and I think its legendary status is enhanced by that. This is no gateway to heaven; there is too much history of scandal and vice behind the brickwork.

My homage to the grandness of the Jerome demanded compositional balance and good spatial sensitivity. I knew my shooting position and for this to work I needed the help of the Aspen police department who have always been a joy to deal with.

We had no desire to be lame with our props and brought one of the world’s most expensive cars - the Ferrari 250 GTO - onto the set. That immediately allowed me to tell a bohemian story and in Kate Bock and Brooks Nader we had the talent to embrace the vibe.

My goal was to take an original photograph that Aspenites could smile at and in so doing celebrate one of the most historic hotels in America.

There is nowhere quite like The Jerome.“

"Horsepower" the work of Ashley Collins and David Yarrow — opens to our community this Friday, May 8th at Relevant Galleries, Cherry Creek North.

THE PROCESS

Ashley Collins starts with pages torn from 1800s Harper’s Monthly journals, aged outside at her California ranch for a year before a single brushstroke touches them.

Then the horse emerges, built at ladder height, her body physically embedded in the scale of the work.

Then found objects: her grandmother’s clothespins. Vinyl records. Keys fashioned into spurs.

Then resin, spread with a blowtorch. History sealed beneath glass.

Collectors discover new objects in their paintings years after purchase. The work never finishes revealing itself.

Most people never see this side of an Ashley Collins painting.

The back of her canvas reads like a journal entry of thoughts, symbols, and intentions.

A stream of consciousness.

Questions she’s sitting with.

It’s not a process note. It’s not a title card. It’s a conversation she’s having with the painting before anyone else gets to meet it.

Her work comes to Denver Friday, May 8th. RSVP details coming soon.
