MARC ATTALI
FORME DE TOI (1968)

Forme de Toi (Shape of You) is the beautiful 1968 book by French photographer Marc Attali, published in 1968, Attali uses repetition and sequencing of photographic fragments, often keeping the camera extremely close to the model to explore details of the body. The book is an ode to the female form, both worshipful and obsessive. Perfectly printed with thick black pages, a pre-1970s gem.

ANTONIO LOPEZ
ANTONIO’S GIRLS (1982)

Antonio’s Girls is THE classic book from Antonio Lopez. Lopez was a transformative Puerto Rican-American fashion illustrator known for dynamic, vibrant art and photography in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, & The NYT. He captured the energy of 70s/80s style with bold lines, diverse models like Grace Jones, Jerry Hall & Tina Chow. He challenged photography’s dominance, championed racial diversity, and defined an era of fashion illustration before his untimely death from AIDS, leaving a legacy of iconic muses and celebrated work.

JIM JOCOY
WE’RE DESPERATE (2002)

The year was 1977, Punk rock music and fashion blew out of New York City, exploded in London, and caught like wildfire in San Francisco, Los Angeles and the world over. It developed everywhere, and every region had its own identity. But it was in San Francisco and L.A. where the most radical behaviour in stateside punk rock style and attitude was exhibited. It was anti-hippie, anti-disco, anti-parent and anti-“nice”. And it was shockingly new. These photos are ground zero of punk rock style, an innovation in youth culture that is replicated to this day. This brilliant book from Jim Jocoy is like A 1970s punk version of Shoichi Aoki’s Fruits, cover to cover style.

HIGH & MEL STONES
THATS A CRAZY ONE: N.Y.C. 199’S (2017)

The true origins of the infamous Larry Clark film ‘Kids’. An inside look at the street and skate culture of New York City in the early 90’s. Photographs by High and Mel Stones, with a collection of art and writing from the ‘Kids’ that inspired the cult classic film. Featuring Harold Hunter, Chloe Sevigny, Justin Pierce & many more of the ‘Kids’. The cast of the film was notoriously street cast from flyers posted around New York City’s sketchiest skate spots at the time of these photographs. A rarely seen masterpiece of 90s New York street culture that defined a generation.

FRANCESCA WOODMAN (1998)

Francesca Woodman began photography at the age of 13, with her images showing an emotional intensity from the start and a depth of obscurity barely seen in what others might call ‘The Swining Sixties’. Often her work focused on a somewhat ghostly and evanescent presence of her own form. Delving into Woodman’s world leaves you both bewildered and bewitched, that all the images she created were in a tragically short period before she took her own life at just 22. Her adolescent obsession with metamorphosis led her to create a lot of work, but only one book was ever published during Woodman’s lifetime, and most were distributed at her funeral. This is the first book to be published posthumously in 1998, and still the best and most comprehensive Woodman book there is.

ROMAIN SLOCOMBE
TOKYO BLUE (2004)

Romain Slocombe takes his lens to the blue of Tokyo. The neon lights, the metro and of course, the ‘broken Dolls’ of Tokyo’s deviant underbelly. In the late 90s and early 2000s Slocombe documented subjects decked out in medical attire, Bandaged and swaddled in gauze, wearing eye patches, casts, and neck braces. Hard to find, easy to love.

PAUL KOOIKER, ARNO NOLLEN
HOTEL NEW YORK HOOKED (2005)

Dutch photographers Paul Kooiker & Arno Nollen reimagine the erotic tales of Maria Heiden through a selection of photographs in Hooked, Hotel New York. Kooiker & Nollen’s sculptural photographs of the body give them a unique style and characteristic rarely seen in today’s photography. Beautiful work from a pair of the most unique photographers around.

BILLYMONK
BILLYMONK (2011)

Billy Monk had no formal training in photography when he began taking pictures of the patrons at the Catacombs, a seedy back street nightclub in Cape Town, South Africa. He originally began taking photos in the club with the intention of selling the photographs back to the people he was capturing in the club. Monk stopped photographing at the club in 1969. Ten years later, his contact sheets and negatives were discovered, and in 1982 the work was exhibited at the Market Gallery in Johannesburg. Monk could not make the opening, and two weeks later, en route to seeing the show, he became involved in an argument. A fight broke out, Monk was fatally shot in the chest and never saw his work exhibited. This brilliant book of these images was eventually made in 2011.

NORIAKI YOKOSUKA
ODA ERIKA (1999)

Oda Erika is the brilliant 1999 book by celebrated Japanese photographer Noriaki Yokosuka. Documenting the celebrated cult actor Erika Oda, who starred in Japanese Hirokazu Kore-eda directed films like After Life before stopping acting in 2010. The wide scope and ‘90s aesthetic give these images a soft, sensitive feel as well as an editorial edge that the photographer is known for. Another amazing Japanese photo book from the 90s.
