Comment “depression stoppers” and I’ll send you my dad’s list of depression stoppers.

My dad was an incredible man of God.

Before I was born, he was a pastor.

He spent much of his adult life with chronic depression, but he never let this define him.

He was a man who understood mental struggle, with a sincere faith.

I remember our last days so vividly, reading Psalms, singing hymns, whispering in his ear that we would adopt a little girl on the other side of the world.

I like to think he understood it all... she would eventually share his middle name.

When he passed a few years back I got his study bible and in the front page was a list of “Depression Stoppers.”

The page was filled with verses and phrases that he would read over himself daily to fight his depression.

Now he spends his days with Jesus but his ministry and legacy here on earth continues.

I pray these verses are a blessing and the Lord uses them for you as he did for my dad.
Our tendency is to push against the release of control — control of work, control of relationships, control of family, control of logistics, control of fear, control of whatever. After all, isn’t managing our lives what it means to be an adult? So we hold on tight, but our death grip just leads to more anxiety, more stress.

Afraid of taking a risk, of losing control, I often miss opportunities for play, which is a shame because it’s play that breaks us out of our stressful routines and rejuvenates us.

It’s play that so often restores our freedom and joy.
It’s three o’clock and you’re running on empty. I know the feeling.

By the time the kids arrived home from school each afternoon, I felt like I’d been hit by a train. I wanted to crawl into bed... The shame I felt from shortchanging them pushed me to forge ahead, with a headache and short fuse.

Are you reaching for an extra shot of caffeine mid-afternoon just to rally? Surviving the evening instead of enjoying it?

See, rest isn’t just about sleep. It’s about what we’re fueling ourselves with all day long.

Multiple studies have found a correlation between a diet high in refined sugars and impaired brain function, and even a worsening of symptoms of mood disorders.

So put the cookie down. Grab the protein instead. Here are my go-to options:
String cheese
Sliced turkey
Greek yogurt
A hard-boiled egg.

A better evening (and a better summer!) starts right now, at three o’clock.
There is no one thing that solves everything. It’s a combination of habits, patterns and rhythms that keeps the angst at bay. Comment “RoR” and I’ll send you a link to the book I wrote that breaks this all down.

Rescue is ready and waiting for us, but so often we get lost in our loops, repeating the same habits over and over, expecting different results.
When you go from being a high-functioning individual to not being able to breathe on your own, you suddenly realize your smallness. Your weakness.

In NYC, the panic had taken over — trains, subways, elevators, crowds. I remember one night, I woke as I’d done so many times before unable to breathe, unable to speak. I could only grip my husband’s arms while he interceded for me. Finally I found my voice and confessed my desperate need:

“God, rescue me; deliver me; I cannot do this without you.”

In an instant my panic evaporated.

He’d found me in my deepest, darkest moment, in the desperation of my complete and utter surrender.

And in the quiet, half-asking myself “Do I count? Do I matter?” I heard God’s voice:
You matter to me; is that enough?

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you.
Before you were born I set you apart.
Do not be afraid — for I am with you.

He drew me out of deep waters. He brought me out into a spacious place. He rescued me because he delighted in me.
Comment “pain to purpose” to discover where you are most resilient in your life.

I uncovered something in the hardest seasons of my life. Not despite the pain. Because of it.

You see, endurance brings an inner quality that is renewed day by day.

There are scars. There are new wrinkles and laugh lines. There is a story written on my body and my life that I couldn’t have written any other way.

Pain always becomes purpose if you let it.

That’s not naive optimism. That’s a life lived as proof.
We are restless when we rest less. We weren’t created for this nonstop pace. We were designed in God’s image, and even God himself rested.

Most of us don’t actually rest. We collapse. We scroll until we fall asleep. We call it rest because we stopped moving — but our nervous systems never got the memo.

Physical rest won’t fix emotional depletion. Spiritual drought won’t heal with a nap. We need the right rest for the right kind of tired.
Every single one of you was crafted with intention in the womb.

Your life matters, God has created you with a specific purpose.
Marriage: the ongoing art of translation... and learning to laugh (and love) through it all.

Tell me we aren’t the only ones. 😅

Intrusive thoughts don’t have to run the show. When one starts, pause and speak what’s true instead.

2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us to “take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.” You can’t speak what’s true and believe a lie at the same time.

Your words have power. When you declare truth, you’re acting in faith — and faith stops an intrusive thought in its tracks. 💛

Comment “Out Loud” and I will send you 10 prayers to pray aloud when life feels overwhelming and those intrusive thoughts are running our mind.
