alright, here’s the story
I got into an exchange program in Europe on my second attempt. The first try didn’t work out because of the war, which cut off connections between my university and Norway. They were supposed to accept me in September 2022. In general, the war reduced international exchange opportunities by half — out of 50 partner universities at HSE (my uni), only 25 remained.
I was furious about the circumstances, but I didn’t give up. In the spring, I applied again and got into a university in Croatia. After living there for a while, I realized I didn’t want to go back home.
Usually, students can easily extend their exchange program for another semester or even longer (I know plenty of people from my university who’ve done this). I made the same request to my Croatian university. But since it’s a private institution, they responded with a tuition fee that was completely unaffordable for me.
Exchange programs are generally free, and I hadn’t paid a single cent for my university education. I ended up declining this option on the very last day of the deadline for applying to a new mobility program.
I had no idea what to do next, but I knew I didn’t want to go back to my old life. I started researching and found out that there was a second round of student applications for universities that still had open spots.
There were three options:
• Kazakhstan (everything in Russian — boring)
• Mexico (everything in Spanish — I don’t know a word of it)
• Brazil (Portuguese, but with some courses in English)
I got excited. I started gathering documents, submitted my application, and waited on edge for a response. Everyone knows the unspoken rule: If you’ve already been on an exchange, give others a chance — getting accepted twice is unlikely.
A few weeks later, I got an answer. Accepted. Saying I was shocked is an understatement.
