They’re usually struggling to read words they were never taught how to decode. (I see this way too often.)
If a child has not been taught the sound-spelling pattern or a morpheme in a word, we can’t call it a reading problem... yet.
We have to ask:
Did we teach that phonics skill?
Did we give enough practice?
Did we connect the sound to the spelling?
Did we give them decodable text that actually matches what they know?
A lot of kids are labeled as “struggling readers” when really, they’ve been asked to memorize, guess, or figure out words without the code.
Reading is not magic. It’s not guessing from a picture. It’s not memorizing hundreds of words.
It’s learning how sounds connect to print, practicing those patterns, and applying them in real reading.
Before we say, “They can’t read,” we need to ask:
“Have they been taught what they need to read this text/book I've given them?"
That's my goal always.
When sounding words out or chunking parts of a word that have to be blended back together, students often struggle to hear the word being said. This is a skill that they develop over time with explicit practice and teaching.
