Drove south from Vlore to explore some of the wonderful beaches in southern Albania. Here you will find rock beaches (which is common in the Balkans) and crystal clear turquoise waters. Himara is a small community of about 28,000 people including the surrounding villages. It is predominantly populated by an ethnic Greek community. I can look at this view all day!
Situated in southern Albania, Gjirokastra is located on the steep side of the Drino valley overlooking the mountains. This ‘city of a thousand steps’ comprises hundreds of Ottoman-style tower houses with distinctive stone roofs, wooden balconies and whitewashed stone walls. Known by many as the “City of Stone”, a walk around the network of cobbled streets that climb steeply out of the bazaar will transport you back in time. Don’t forget to visit the 13th-century castle that sits above the city - apart from the great views (see pic!), you will also get a better understanding of Gjirokastra’s tumultuous past.
Located a short drive from the capital city of Tirana, Kruja is a town in north central Albania, located between Mount Krujë and the Ishëm River. Take a walk through the old bazaar and pick up some local handicrafts (remember to barter!) before venturing up the steep slope to Kruja castle. Kruja castle is home to the Skanderbeg museum, an important part of Albanian history. It was from this fortress that Albania’s hero – George Kastrioti Skanderbeg – defended the country from Ottoman invasion over a period spanning three decades.
Sunsets are comforting and in a strange way give us hope, even though a setting sun is all about saying goodbye to the day. On this particular day, January 16, 2024, it was just all about saying goodbye 🕊️ and the heavens definitely put on a spectacular show 🌅

Unlike other bird species where the female’s colours are muted, both male and female lilac-breasted rollers are equally as colourful.
