Closing soon— this marks the last weekend to see Rania Matar’s powerful solo exhibition Where Do I Go? لوين روح

With this work, Matar explores how Lebanon its people have reckoned with the legacy of the nation’s past, they also confronted the struggles of the present— economic instability, lingering reminders of the pandemic, undue violence across the region, and for many, the enduring pain of the Beirut Port Explosion.

Through it all, Matar has found hope and inspiration in Lebanon’s young women. Her arresting portraits affirm the presence, strength, and resilience of her subjects. Whether situated in an abandoned building or within the country’s natural landscape, history, place, and identity become one in her images. The women’s presence exudes out of the frame, claiming space— asking their audience to look at them, and to answer Where Do I Go?

Don’t miss out— please make time to sit with this powerful exhibition before it closes.

“Where Do I Go?” — Fawzia at a bus stop, body caught between two signs pointing in different directions: Beirut one way, Choueifat the other. Neither. Both. A metaphor made physical — the limbo of always being in between.

My husband and I are supposed to head to Lebanon tomorrow and it looks like tensions are rising in Beirut again… (it never stopped in the South). As long as the airport stays open we’re going, but to have your life constantly dictated by war and conflict is truly exhausting. And we are the lucky ones who ultimately have the choice…. I don’t take that for granted.

2 months ago we got to the gate in Paris to board our flight to Beirut and it was canceled.

I am heading to Lebanon on Wednesday! My previous trip was aborted and instead, I ended up helplessly watching a war from thousands of miles away.

I have been thinking a lot about the land and our deep attachment to the land — especially as we watch the South of Lebanon and Gaza bombed, destroyed, maimed, and occupied, the olive trees burning, the land made barren and unfarmable. About how land is not simply ground. It is memory made physical. About how, even if we leave, we never really leave.

The idea of a project is starting to form and I am waiting to be in Lebanon for it to clarify itself. It always happens. If you would like to collaborate in any way, please reach out to me 🙏🏼

My work has given me a chance to keep talking about Lebanon the past few months. I am grateful and also committed not to stop!

Lebanese-American photographer Rania Matar explores what home, belonging and personal freedom can feel like for young Lebanese women today in her series Where Do I Go?, photographed across Beirut.

Moving between nature, abandoned spaces and intimate portraits, the images feel raw, alive and deeply personal. Less about posing, more about presence.
Where Do I Go? at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art. A little bit of Lebanon in Indiana. I am grateful to everyone at the museum for this opportunity to amplify our voices from Lebanon, and bear witness to our stories and histories. I am especially grateful to all the women in these pictures for inspiring me and trusting me: You give me hope for Lebanon.

This exhibition has been planned for 2 years but the timing is now so relevant — sadly.

I am giving a talk today (April 2, 5PM). Please join me. I hope I can share some beauty from my birth country — and its majestic women — and help shed some light on what’s happening in Lebanon today 🤍🕊️🙏🏽

This exhibition is beautifully curated by for the
Across ’s body of work, pictures become a form of listening. In Where Do I Go?, shot in Lebanon after the Beirut port explosion, the images shift focus away from destruction and toward the women who continue to show up, rebuild, and hold their ground. Each portrait is shaped collaboratively, emerging from dialogue about place, memory, and personal history.

Women appear climbing rocks, entering abandoned buildings, or standing firmly within the landscape, gestures that feel both intimate and symbolic. The result is a body of work that speaks to endurance without romanticising struggle, and to belonging as something felt rather than fixed.

These portraits remind us that home can be uncertain, identity layered, and presence itself an act of quiet resistance.
