Do you prefer the challenge of capturing everything in one frame, waiting for that short window when the sky, city lights, and atmosphere all come together naturally? Or do you prefer shooting a sequence of images and blending different moments together, combining the best sky, building lights, and light trails into a final image that reflects your vision?
In the end, both approaches aim for the same result, that is creating an image that tells the story you want to tell. The difference is simply in the process, whether that story is captured in a single instant or crafted from several moments over time.

I always search for foregrounds that give the dunes more character, whether it’s unusual formations, isolated shrubs, or even untouched sand ripples alone. For this panorama, I arrived before sunset to scout the area since once darkness sets in under Bortle 3 skies, it becomes impossible to see the terrain clearly. That was when I found this deep basin, its shape resembling an enormous impact crater beneath the stars.
I also lighted a bonfire about 30 meters away, which added a soft diffused glow along the left side of the frame, balancing the low level light already present on the right. The subtle lighting cast long ripple shadows across the dunes and created a dark center that almost looked like the crater was filled with water.
I positioned myself near the Cygnus end of the Milky Way arch, using the distant light pollution to bring out my silhouette against the night sky.

The target is the M8 Lagoon Nebula and M20 Trifid Nebula, two of the most iconic nebulae near the core of the Milky Way in the constellation Sagittarius. Both are active star forming regions filled with glowing hydrogen gas, dark dust lanes, and young luminous stars.
The system I used was a full frame stock unmodified Nikon Z8 paired with a telephoto lens and mounted on a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer 2i Pro. This type of setup still feels very close to traditional astrophotography. There is no computer controlling the mount and no autoguiding involved, just a camera, a telephoto lens, a tracker, and a great deal of patience. That simplicity is part of what makes this setup rewarding, though at times frustrating as well.
To locate the target, I had to manually sweep the rig across the sky while taking repeated test exposures. After each shot, I reviewed the image on the back of the camera, adjusted the framing, and tried again. Since the nebula itself does not immediately stand out in short test exposures, I could not clearly tell whether the target was actually in frame. The surrounding star patterns suggested I was close, but confirming it required carefully comparing the stars in my images against the patterns shown in the Stellarium app.

"Aligned with the Cosmos"

I’ve wanted to create a deep sky portrait for a long time, so last weekend I headed to the darkest spot in the UAE to finally do it. I started thinking about which target would give the strongest colors while still rising low on the horizon, and immediately the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex together with the IC 4592 Blue Horsehead Nebula came to mind. The nebula lies near Antares in the central region of Scorpius while still hanging low above the horizon.
I asked my brother to stand on the crest of a tall sand dune and try different poses while I aligned him with the deep sky subject. To reveal the nebula’s colors and dark dust structures, I captured 3.5 hours of exposure data with calibration frames, followed by extensive stretching and processing in Adobe Photoshop to bring out the finer details.

This was shot in May 2025. What stood out to me was how the sand dunes naturally aligned with the arc of the Milky Way above. I arrived early and used augmented reality to plan the composition on site, matching the position of the galaxy with the dune formations.
For the pano, I used a nodal head to keep the rotation precise and efficient while moving through each frame. Shot at 20mm, my usual choice for Milky Way work, with about 30 percent overlap per frame to keep stitching consistent.
