Johnnie Brown is one of Palm Beach’s celebrities and The Colony Hotel’s mascot. Affectionately known as JB, he was the beloved pet monkey and constant companion of Addison Mizner, the famous architect who designed the Everglades Club and much of Palm Beach.
Rumor has it that JB once ran for the mayor of Palm Beach and lost by only 4 votes! In the 1920’s, this monkey could be spotted in the heart of town on Addison’s shoulder, and you can find his little resting place off Worth Avenue today.
The Colony Hotel holds a special place in my heart due to its lavish use of De Gournay wallpapers, each featuring handpainted portraits of JB!

In “The Jungle Book,” by Rudyard Kipling, the Langur monkeys steal human objects with the belief that mimicry will make them more like man.
In this painting, the monkeys have stolen a watch and a wallet, symbols of time and money. Despite their curiosity, the monkeys will never grasp why humans value these two commodities above all else.
This painting will be a part of a group show at Robert Lange Studios based on literature and its creative impact on the participating artists. Opening night is February 6th from 6-8:30pm. The show will run for the month of February. Come visit the gorgeous gallery and all of the remarkable art that they showcase!
