This next year, we have 6 months of dedicated research time. I’ve been contemplating how I want to tailor my CV to fit the job I want. I’ve always been very interested in treating breast cancer. During PGY-2, I wrote a clinical trial aimed to assess physical exam & MRI findings with patient-reported outcomes of breast edema after radiation. Gamma Knife Radiosurgery, or SRS, is a radiation technique that utilizes Co-60 as a source. Co-60 goes through beta decay to a stable isotope of Ni-60 with a half-life of 5.26 years. As part of the decay process, one electron with energy up to 315 KeV & two gamma rays with energies of 1.17 MeV and 1.33 MeV are emitted. It is the gamma radiation that is used to clinical effect & contributed to naming of the procedure.
During a typical gamma knife treatment, a halo 😇 metal frame is placed on the patient by the neurosurgeon, a CT scan is performed, and then the treatment is delivered as an outpatient procedure. It can be used as an adjunct or an alternative to microsurgical techniques. Because the dose fall off is very steep, surrounding brain tissue is typically spared. Other advantages are that risky skull base surgeries and general anesthesia may be avoided.
