One year ago I randomly switched my R5 to video during a birthday party I was booked to photograph - I did it for free just to practice but when I started editing I was MESMERIZED— the still photos were beautiful, but the video was so…tangible.

I’ve dabbled in creating videos with my “big girl camera” since my kids were little, but the new mirrorless cameras making adding video a no brainer.

In the last year I’ve made an extra $20k from adding videos along with branding to my list of services — usually combining the two for small businesses.

I rarely throw numbers and how much I make out there, but I’m doing it to hopefully get your attention — specifically the photographers frustrated at lack of bookings. The world is NOT the same one it was in 2015. In the past month, I’ve had a dozen clients ask for photos that “look like they’re in a movie” and I really don’t think it’s a coincidence.

I’ve been calling this shift for over two years now. Less posing, more storytelling. Adding video. Learning how to capture moments instead of orchestrate perfection.

We started a focus on video this month in the Collective and we’ll be carrying that over into June while adding lessons on family storytelling both lifestyle and outdoor sessions.

JUST HIT RECORD.
Before I head into busy season, I’m going to tryyyyy to catch up on all the families I never had time to share on here 🥹 Travel sessions can be hectic, especially when they span two different states and multiple families…but next week kicks off summer families, senior sessions starting and a handful of warm weather newborns!

So here’s the California/Arizona minis from March (April?? When was I there lol?) that have been sitting in my “to post” folder 🫶
I taught myself newborn photography with a little window very similar to this one back in 2008 — it wasn’t “perfect”…but learning to work with available light (and a very very basic hobbyist camera/lens combo) helped me become the photographer I am today.

And from a mom’s perspective, this kind of every day window light is how I remember my now grown kids when they were little: when I look at old memories, I’m not worried about catchlights, I just want to be transported to the days when I could hold them in my arms 🥹

So if you’re struggling to use the light in your clients’ homes, your studio doesn’t have a giant window, or strobes stress you out—this video is free inside the freebie bundle along with another newborn video from this year’s Newborn Bootcamp! Comment FREE to get both videos!

As always, you can ask questions here in the comments or inside the app/facebook group!
These boys have grown so much in the nearly 9 years since that first September evening when I let them play with my camera in the parking lot of a Mexican restaurant. 🥹

Not only was it wild to spend a few hours getting to know Colter, Cooper and Cale for the young men they’ve become — but this session ended in a spot I used to know like the back of my hand…Rick Riddle’s old nursery/tree farm. I photographed hundreds of people here, filmed so many Collective videos and watched countless Indiana sunsets.

Most of the trees are gone now, but it was magical to photograph these four for one last golden hour session.🥹

It was the perfect way to wrap up a season in all five of our lives that somehow seem to always cross paths at just the right time. ♥️
This little doll baby was the perfect model to train my assistant, Sara on filming live videos — at 5.5 weeks old, she was a wee bit past the super sleepy baby stage for traditional newborn portraits (I’m mostly boycotting those still lol) but definitely slept long enough to knock a few basic poses out AND get some awake macros in!
Following Rachel Venoven’s announcement as a speaker at the Newborn and Portrait Summit, we wanted to share a bit more about what she will be bringing to the stage.

will be doing a live demo with a real newborn, giving us the chance to see her full process as it happens, step by step.

During the demo, she will focus on fixing the most common lighting problems with newborns and show how she works with light in a simple, intentional way to create strong, emotional images straight out of camera.

But her session goes beyond the creative side.

She will also talk about the business side of photography, sharing practical perspectives from her own journey, real lessons, decisions, and what it really takes to build something sustainable over time.

And something beautiful is unfolding behind the stage…

All Summit participants are invited to stay after the summit in the lobby, where the conversation continues in a very real and open way. Rachel will be doing business audits, answering questions, and spending time with photographers who want deeper clarity on their work and their direction.

It’s not a formal talk. It’s a space for honest feedback, real conversations, and added value that goes beyond the stage.

And we can’t wait for you to be part of it. 💛

I don’t own a lens cap 😅
My camera bag = the backseat of my car 💅
And my file backup plan is ✨optimism✨

What are some of your Type B Photographer traits? I need to find my people lol
I’m trying to think if I’ve ever done a shoot like this — and I don’t think I have! Absolutely dying to edit these photos 🫶🏻 #nottwins #cousins #newbornphotography
So many other newborn photographers will come for me, but my assistants should always have their hands ON/inches away for the majority of time in props. Hands either can quickly move in and out of the frame OR I even do composites if I’m not comfortable with baby’s amount of potential movement!

Anyone who has taken a workshop with me has heard me tell my assistant: “RUIN MY SHOT” that means, don’t be hesitant to put your hands on baby while I’m shooting, I’ll never ever ever get mad with an overly cautious spotter!

My trained assistants are also watching baby’s breathing patterns, eyelids fluttering and like you see in this video—arm twitching. All precursors to newborn movement! Another reason why a newborn assistant > parent spotters 💛
