I have been using this mic’ing technique for a few years now and I love it: it’s relatively cheap and works perfectly with my work flow - quick, simple and always ready to go.

A bit of context, I set-up my studio in the spare bedroom of our flat in London, so small space; I constantly have to be inventive with space management. To use tripods that would stay permanently around the piano wasn’t really a solution.
🎤 This system is pretty simple: a table clamp mic stand + upside down stereo bar + 2 shockmounts for my Neumann KM 184.
This particular clamp has a nice grip which fits the ornamental shape of the wood of the piano. I added a layer of felt inbetween to avoid any damage to the wood and remove a bit of resonance.
I’m now using a wider stereo bar to allow more flexibility with mic placements and stereo image.
The shockmounts are there to absorb a bit of the sound that travels through the wood. But they also allow me to easily swap the mics - I don’t own an extensive mic collection so I tend to use them for everything 😅

I sampled my cassette recorded, spread it across the keyboard in Kontakt, added 2 layers of other samples, some tape saturation, reverb and delay and…watched hours of tutorial on YouTube on how to make my own interface and I’m proud to say that
I made very first Kontakt instrument! 😅
