The Browns Mart Theatre in Darwin is the oldest surviving building in Darwin’s city centre and started life as a mining exchange in 1885. Designed by architect, John George Knight (he also designed the original Parliament House in Melbourne), the simple porcelanite stone colonial plan building has withstood the devastating cyclones of 1897, 1937, 1974 and Japanese bombing of 1942-43! Nowadays wonderful local artistic performances are the only threat likely to bring this house down! 😃👍 the second last pic are the remains of the Town Hall (destroyed in Cyclone Tracy) which he designed in 1883. The temporary levee that saved much of Maryborough’s CBD from flooding. I for one won’t hear of any criticism of our local council, the staff, the emergency crews who set up the levee and manned the checkpoints, the CEO, Ken Diehm and of course George Seymour, our Mayor! Well we are flooding again and it’s described as a unique event. It’s seems we are having unique events every few months! The last major flood we had was 6 weeks ago and this one is expected to be bigger. The first pic shows the corner of March and Wharf Street, Maryborough in 1955. The second pic is the same corner today. The Mary River at Gympie is currently at 22.95 metres and it will be expected to get higher, eventually to hit Maryborough in the next 24 hours! 😬#queenslandfloods#maryborough#climatechange#flood#queenslandlife#
The old Rockhampton Supreme Court was designed by John James Clarke (or “JJ” to his friends), in 1886-87. He also designed the Mackay Courthouse(1884) (swipe➡️) and Charters Towers Court House (1886). In the late 1850’s JJ embarked on a grand tour to Europe and absorbed the wondrous delights of Palladian architecture and the Italian Renaissance. He returned, forever changed (well who wouldn’t be after a grand tour) and he set about over the next 40 years creating some of Australia’s best known buildings (and certainly his greatest work in Queensland, in my opinion, the Treasury Building in Brisbane). 🤓#thegrandtour #queenslander#queenslanderliving#queenslandarchitecture #courthouse
“The Farmhouse” was built in 1921 and belonged to dairy man William Storey. 👩‍🌾 🐄 🐮 The top floor was one room, later divided into two and the back verandah was enclosed with windows in 1947. The house is stripped bare of any unnecessary decoration, revealing only straight practical lines and plenty of storage underneath. In the 1970’s/80’s the farm was subdivided for housing estates and the National Trust rescued the home, citing it as a good example of a North Queensland Farmhouse, which by this time, was fast disappearing. “Yongala Lodge” was built in 1883 by prominent timber merchants, three brothers, John, Jacob and Matthew Rooney. The home was built specifically for Matthew and his family who eventually moved into the home, by the Strand waterfront, in the 1890’s. However tragedy struck in 1911 when the family (and the rest of the 119 passengers and crew) drowned in the sinking of the luxury ship they were travelling in from Melbourne, the SS Yongala. The ship hit a rock and sank during a cyclone, south of Townsville at Cleveland Bay. The home then reverted to a private hospital, a block of flats and is now a motel. The sinking of the Yongala has since become known as “Townsville’s Titanic” and is a popular dive spot off Cape Bowling Green. #townsville#queenslander #queenslanderliving#queenslandhomes #queenslandarchitecture
Masonic Lodge time! 😃🙌 The Mackay Masonic Temple was designed by the Maryborough born architect Frederick Herbert Faircloth in 1925. Mr Faircloth mainly practiced in Bundaberg at the time but was eagerly sought after during Mackay’s boom period of the 1920’s. Unfortunately poor Herb died before it was completed.
