This week's #SmileoftheWeek 😀 belongs to 9-year-old Frederick (Fred) of Yeppoon. Fred lives with Phelan-McDermid syndrome, a rare genetic disorder causing autism, seizures, and insomnia. He was diagnosed with the disorder at 10 months after missing some developmental milestones. Several specialities make up Fred's care team, including neurology, respiratory, gastroenterology and child development. Fred and his family are also supported by our Paediatric Palliative Care Service, who provide physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual support to children and young people with a life-limiting illness. When he's not at the hospital, Fred enjoys being active, outdoors, watching and spending time with his family. Thanks for sharing your smile, Fred.

Our teams recently farewelled 8-month-old Bridie, from Rockhampton, who was able to go home after spending more than 130 days in hospital. 👋✨

Bridie was referred to us from her GP because she was having trouble gaining and maintaining her weight. To keep her nourished, Bridie was put on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) - also known as intravenous (IV) feeding. Thanks to the TPN, Bridie made huge progress towards her treatment goals - doubling in weight and reaching all her developmental milestones. Congratulations, Bridie!

Bridie will continue recieving TPN for a little longer to keep her growing strong, but after such a long admission, her mum and dad are just thrilled to be back home with their little girl. 🏡 ✈️

Meet this week's #SmileOfTheWeek 😃, 13‑year‑old, George, from Kenmore. 👋 George has been with us since December to treat Guillain‑Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder where his immune system attacks nerves causing his muscles to weaken. George has been smashing his rehab goals - working on strengthening his muscles and learning to walk and use his hands again. He is looking forward to heading home, getting back to school and catching up with his friends - things he's missed the most. ✨Thank you for sharing your smile with us, George! 😃
Meet our Director of Cardiac Perfusion and #HealthHero 🦸, Anthony. ❤️🫀

He leads our paediatric perfusion team (the only one in Queensland). With more than 30 years’ experience as a perfusionist, he helps keep children safe during open-heart surgery by operating a heart-lung machine, which temporarily takes over the work of the heart and lungs during the procedure.

Anthony says working with children has taught him that every child is unique and there isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to heart surgery. He loves being able to work with surgeons, anaesthetics and theatre teams to makes adjustments in real time.

"Families place an enormous amount of trust in us. Knowing that our work helps gives children the best chance to recover and return to their families is incredibly meaningful. Being part of the moment when a child's heart is safely restarted after surgery is something I won't forget."

Thank you, Anthony, for your dedication to supporting Queensland children and families through life-saving heart surgery. ❤️
Hand hygiene day hallelujah 🙌🫧🧼

Clean hands help keep kids safe and healthy, especially if they are sick or injured. If your child is in hospital, encourage them to wash their hands (for at least 20 seconds) with soap and running water or sanitise with hand gel - particularly...
✋🧼 before eating
✋🧼 after going to the toilet.
✋🧼 after blowing their nose, sneezing or coughing
✋🧼 when their hands look dirty

Let’s keep making hand hygiene a healthy and happy habit. 🫧❤️

May The 4th Be With You everyone!

To celebrate #StarWarsDay, some very special guests from a galaxy far, far away visited young (and old) rebels at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

Stormtroopers, Imperial officers and guards, and The Mandalorian patrolled the wards, swapping blasters for thermometers and stethoscopes as they fraternised with staff on their rounds.

Our infection control team were pleased to see hand hygiene was a top priority for the visitors. Turns out even the Empire takes infection control seriously! 💫

May the Force be with every brave patient, family, and staff member with us right now—you’re the real heroes of this episode. ⭐

Vaccination is still the best way to keep you and your family safe from preventable diseases. 💪

If you’re coming to the hospital, visit our drop-in vaccination clinic on Level 2 and speak to our team about:
🗓️checking if your and your child’s immunisations are up to date
🩹getting yourself or your child immunised.

Also, flu season is coming! 🤧 Now is the best time to get your child vaccinated before it peaks. Young children and babies can get very sick from the flu and are often exposed to germs in places like childcare. 🦠

Our clinic has the new nasal spray vaccine for patients aged 2 to 5 years. It’s needle-free, safe and an effective way to protect kids from the flu.

Our trauma researchers have found that 1 in 4 kids admitted with e-scooter injuries need intensive care treatment, and two-thirds need surgery. 🛴🚑 🤕

The study also found 38% of patients with a head injury experienced ongoing functional impairments affecting cognition, learning, and communication.

Director of Trauma Professor Roy Kimble said: “The study highlights that the incidence of e-scooter accidents is increasing, and that they are causing serious, sometimes fatal, injuries in children.

“A helmet should be non-negotiable, even for short trips,” he said. “A helmet can mean the difference between an acute head injury and long-term neuro-cognitive consequences.”
