I have been in the industry for 10 years. I never knew how much being a nail artist would mean to me. I found love in creating art on the smallest of canvases. It was never just doing nails to me. I wanted to be in the magazines, to enter competitions and to experience the awards nights. I wanted to achieve anything that was possible.
By 2021, I had won two awards, earned both gold and silver, and trained with some of the top nail technicians in the industry. In 2022, I was at the peak of my career. I became a finalist in the Scratch Stars Awards, came 2nd in my very first competition when I had no idea what I was doing, had features published in magazines and had my nail designs shared on social media worldwide. I was on cloud nine.
But since then I have completely lost my confidence and maybe even lost my love for it. I still love the designs but I hate the social media. I hate how if youβre not sharing your life constantly, youβre considered irrelevant. I feel like I have to be available 24/7. Itβs as though taking a day off isnβt acceptable.
I love all of my clients and the close, personal relationship we have. But I hate the disrespect that sometimes comes with it. Late arrivals and last minute cancellations, and the frustration I get when I enforce my cancellation policy. it makes me feel like my time isnβt valued. Clients want beautiful nails, but they rush me after arriving late, forgetting that this is my career and my income.
I still want to be here in another 10 years time and I would love nothing more than to get back to where I was. But itβs starting to look completely out of reach.
So if I ask you to arrive on time for your appointment, itβs not because I want to be strict or avoid running late. Itβs because I donβt want to give up on something I love.
