brought a roll of bubble wrap to sit on. I was I had. Right in front of me too, had to stare at his comfy ass all workout.
I started behind for the first half. We didn’t even pop up on the big screen until we were in the top 20. I basically guessed at my pace so i was anxious for a while but slowly picked off the field in the back half. Machines would show who was directly in front and behind us and how far away. So every new name that popped up i would scan the field to find them and focus on that one person until they were in the rear view.
that worked until I was in 5th. Hogberg and Esslinger were far ahead. I had Gamboa a safeish distance behind me and I could see him. Then Brent in front of me and ahead of him. Brent is sitting right next to me. We have about 5km left I believe. We roll in silence for a couple minutes then Brent says “what are we doin here Vellner”, to which I reply “I’m just trying to get out of here”. Brent tells me he’s bee testing Cole out a bit but can’t make up any ground. Cole is also 2 rowers over 😂. I tell Brent I’m totally fine to take 5th, I was already cranking and after that much work I didn’t want to get into a sprint and mess myself up. Brent agrees then yells over his shoulder to Cole “shut it down”. I told the I’d keep an eye on Roy and if he kicks I’ll signal, it otherwise we’ll cruise it in. Which we did. Zero regrets.
I could barely stand up off the rower. AndAfter this I watched some sprint finishes before we figured out we were allowed to leave, and boy was I glad that wasn’t me.
It was a tough walk out of there. I had an ice bath and slowly watched people should up and try to get in. No less than 4 people got ab cramps trying to lower themselves in and would full dunk and have to be rescued. Incredible.
I ate as much as I could that night at the hotel and ran into having a glass of wine at the hotel after winning the row for the women. Unfazed. What an absolute legend.
Anyways I’m sure there’s more. I have a vivid memory of this ever, because of the trauma. If we ever cross paths I’ll tell you all about it.
#marathonrow
The marathon row is the most asked about event I’ve ever done. I’ve thought about it lots, so here’s a breakdown from my perspective.
Its 2018. It was the fourth event of day 1. It was a big day. 3 events down, 3 hours to go… is there even any point in warming up?
I’m the warm up area it seems like not really. Most everyone’s warm up consisted of applying astro glide, squeezing out every bit of pee possible and putting on some combination of tape, grips and gloves.
We has some heads up about this event and were told we’d be allowed to bring one basket worth of supplies onto the floor. I loaded mine with water, some liquid carbs and a tub full of marathon gels and gummy bears. I noticed a few poor souls with tragically empty baskets. Bad idea.
On the floor anticipation was high, too high. On the countdown to start our 3 hour workout someone jumped the gun and false started which messed up the system and they had to take 5 minutes to reset. Like that extra 1 second was gonna help. What it did reveal though was that the DJ was about to drop 3 hours of bass thumping EDM. and I were right in front of the DJ booth and had a desperate word with the DJ. Begging him not to do it. “I gotchul” he says. When the music drops. It was clear he didn’t have us 😂.
Here’s what I remember from the event:
I had a lot of time to kill. I tried to look at every spectator in the face. It was easy because The stadium emptied a lot by the 2k mark.
vowed to tell a joke on the mic every 2k. He lasted about 3 jokes before reality set in.
I was sitting in the back row near the middle, between Mat and Brent. We could see everyone during the whole event. I absolutely judged the crap out of everyone. Panchiks were wearing belts, lol. got a huge ab cramp like 10k to go. Brutal. went big and took the lead early then blew up. I watched him stand up off the rower and thought “what a rookie”. stood up minutes after, I thought”what a veteran” 😂. Basically I did anything to keep myself mentally engaged.
Mat sweat so much it was pouring under my rower.

Easy to crank out in a garage or basement 😂
Every 3:00 x 6 sets.
Alternate between:
500m row + 15 DB squats with 2x50lbs
And
500m row + 15 DB power cleans with 2x50lbs
Fun workout without a lots of thinking. Easy to scale the weight reps or distance. You should ideally get about 30 seconds of rest every round. Have fun!

Back in the gym and with my arm still a little out of commission I’m trying to put as much junk in my trunk as possible over the next couple months.
Let’s get strong!

The year is 2016. The 10th anniversary of the CrossFit Games, my first appearance as an individual and it so happens, the last year of the games in Carson. Wha a time to be alive. There’s a few stories from this year but today we’ll focus on the ranch.
Your first games is a lot to take in. Check in and media is a cool experience. I look back at 2016 and pine for it sometimes. It was the last time I got to go to a competition and be completely unknown. No fanfare. No pressure. Big time First world problems.
I had no reference point but this year came with what I imagine was extra stress. At check in we were handed a slip of paper, a packing list, and told to meet in the lobby at 3am the next day. Better get to sleep yesterday..
3am comes. Chaos in the lobby. If you’ve been on the scene long you know crossfitters don’t travel light, least of all games athletes. I’m a student, some people had with them more things than own. The brass comes out and tells us we need to pack down to carry on size/weight. Interesting.
After some shuffling we get on a bus then into an airport. We’re staying half awake so we can sleep where we can. We move like cattle through security until there’s a massive hold up and a collective grown comes from the group. has been pulled out of line, and fair enough. Sean packed a full on lasso rope. After being told to pack down to just the essentials for a day of competition this is what he brought… clearly his first day on earth.
If you know Sean he’s the most disarming man on earth, so after southern charming the pants off the whole staff he got to keep his rope. This ended up being good for everyone because on the way home all of Southwest Airlines went down and we were stuck in the airport for hours. Bodies littering the halls. So Sean got the boys roping each other in the terminal to help pass the time. nothing better after a long hard day.
The ranch cool. Gritty and fun. Barely felt like a competition. Intimate, no noise. Great way to get to know the other athletes as a new guy. And I had a great first day in the show to boot before my reputation for slow starts began. More on that another time.
If you’re short on time get into it. 30 minutes in and out. No real warm up required. Find a good podcast to listen to 😂.

As a CrossFit Games athlete and part of the HWPO team, he represents what long-term development and high standards look like at the very top of the sport.
We’re excited to bring that level of experience into the room at Coaches Congress Berlin… not just on stage, but on the floor.
Coaches and gym owners will have the opportunity to train alongside Pat, ask questions and connect in a setting built around learning, conversation and community.

This week I lost a close friend to tragic, avoidable circumstances and had to mourn his loss in the most public way. He was the best of us.
A lot has been said, but a lot has gone unsaid, so I will say this plainly. Whether they withdrew or competed this weekend, athletes are in mourning. We are sad. We are scared. And importantly, we are angry.
I went to work this weekend to support my peers and lean on their support. To play an active role in making sure CrossFit could not just roll past this and to put Lazars name on the floor every chance I could. To keep the problem visible. And I will continue to do so. — This does NOT end after the CrossFit games. I’m committed to using my place in this sport to demand change. Along with others, I’ve been expressing concerns for years and I’m not going anywhere.
For many of us, exercise is our therapy, but understand that no one had fun this weekend and there is much work to be done.
To the Dukic family and Anja all I can say is I’m so sorry. I mourn with you and you’re in my heart.
