In 1976, roughly 75 Rhode Islanders marched through downtown Providence for the state’s first Pride parade.

The march was controversial, hard-fought, and nearly didn’t happen.

Eleven years later, these photos from the Kim Deacon Collection at Providence Public Library captured the 1987 Pride Parade in downtown Providence, documenting a movement that was growing louder, more visible, and impossible to ignore.

The outfits have changed. The hairstyles definitely have. But the reason people gather remains the same: community, visibility, and the belief that everyone deserves to be seen.

This weekend, RI Pride celebrates its 50th anniversary. As downtown fills with color once again, these images are a reminder that today’s traditions were built by generations of Rhode Islanders who showed up, marched, and made space for one another.

The golden anniversary celebration begins Friday night at District Park and continues Saturday with PrideFest, live entertainment, local vendors, and New England’s only illuminated Pride parade lighting up downtown after sunset.

Fifty years later, Rhode Island is still showing up. 🌈

From waterfront concerts to cultural celebrations and a little New Orleans flair, this weekend is packed with reasons to get out and explore Rhode Island.

🎵 In Bristol, the Ragged Island Music Festival returns for two days of live performances set against one of the state's most scenic summer backdrops.

🇬🇭 In Providence, Ghana Cultural Day & Meet & Greet at Track 15 celebrates the music, cuisine, and traditions of Ghana, with a special opportunity to meet Ghana Black Stars legacy players.

🎺 And in Cumberland, the Summer Mardi Gras Festival brings brass bands, Cajun flavors, and craft brews to Phantom Farms Brewing for an afternoon inspired by the spirit of New Orleans.

A free outdoor screening of The NeverEnding Story in the middle of downtown Providence? That's the kind of summer magic we can get behind. ✨🎥

Tonight, Grant's Block Park transforms into an open-air movie theater as Movies on the Block kicks off its summer season with the beloved 1984 fantasy classic. Bring a blanket, grab takeout from a nearby downtown favorite, and settle in as the sun goes down.

The movie starts at dusk, but locals know the best spots disappear quickly. Arrive early, claim your patch of grass, and enjoy one of those simple city moments that reminds us why summer in Providence is hard to beat.

There’s something special about the places that start with friendship, a big idea, and a line out the door.

When James Dean and Joe Hafner teamed up, they brought together Southern biscuit traditions and Philly comfort food to create something uniquely Providence. From a neighborhood pop-up to one of the city’s favorite breakfast spots, Irregardless has won hearts (and stomachs) with legendary breakfast sandwiches and housemade strawberry butter.

It’s the kind of local success story we can all get behind, and proof that a little community support goes a long way.
