Rome, early morning. The door is open — it always has been, but he is not sure it is for him.
Kafka wrote about a man who spent his life waiting for permission to enter. He never did. Here, in Piazza Cavour, the scene writes itself: one figure, one building, one morning that belongs to no one.
The Palazzo di Giustizia was here before you arrived. It will be here after you leave. You are always the smaller thing.

He stood at the door every day. Not waiting for anything in particular. Just present — for whoever was passing, for whoever was coming home.
The group photograph came from him. On the back, in handwriting that is not his, it reads: “Recuerdo del viaje de cacerĂa. Mich. Abril, 1958.” Author unknown.
That is the same man with the rifle, the leather jacket, the cartridge belt — Michoacan in his posture, in the way he holds the gun like it belongs there. You wouldn’t know, looking at that picture, that decades later he would spend his mornings at a gate in the city, greeting strangers.
People change. Or maybe they don’t — maybe the stillness is the same thing, just redirected.
He died in January. Twenty five years ago.
