Project Recover volunteer Scott Althaus spent 12 years working to bring his cousin home.
2Lt. Thomas V. Kelly, Jr. was a bombardier on a B-24 nicknamed "Heaven Can Wait." He went missing on March 11, 1944 over Papua New Guinea. His family passed down four sentences about his death and a grief they could never fully name.
Last Memorial Day, that changed.
Scott's account of this journey is one of the most honest things written about what this mission means to the people waiting at home. For the families of more than 81,000 still-missing Americans, that wait is not over. This is why the work matters.

This Memorial Day, 81,000 Americans still haven't come home.
One of those stories belongs to the crew of a B-52 lost off the coast of Texas in 1968. Eight airmen, eight families, more than 50 years of waiting. In March, over 40 of their relatives gathered in Houston because Project Recover is still out there looking for answers.
Eight men. 81,000 reasons we won't stop.

On May 9, honored something that does not often make it onto a soccer pitch: the story of men who never came home.
Project Recover and the families of the missing aircrew of a U.S. Air Force B-52 were recognized as Heroes of the Match. The aircraft disappeared off the coast of Texas in 1968 during a routine training mission. The crew has never been accounted for.
In attendance representing their family members were Patrick LaMonica, grandson of Major Philip Strine; Steve Salavarria, son of Major Frank Salavarria; and Mark Casey, son of Master Sergeant Kermit Casey.
Thank you to FC Dallas for the platform, the recognition, and your generous donation to this mission. Moments like this remind the public that these men are still out there, and that their families are still waiting.
We are not done looking.
More than 81,000 Americans are still missing. For most of their families, closure never comes.
Scott Althaus is one of the rare exceptions. As a cousin of 2Lt. Thomas V. Kelly, Jr., he has experienced closure twice, once when Project Recover found Tommy's plane in 2018, and again on Memorial Day 2025 when Tommy came home after 81 years.
He wrote about what that felt like. It is worth reading.
