The performance of this piece was beyond just the notes and rhythms, in many different ways. This was the first time this version of the song was performed at a competition or festival. We also got to spend time rehearsing this piece with the writer himself, Mr. Larry Jenkins, a GRAMMY Award-winning educator and composer. Mr. Jenkins and Mr. Aguilar had only known each other via social media and were both on the same GRAMMY Music Educator Award Quarterfinalist and Yamaha 40 Under 40 lists prior to meeting in person. From afar, Mr. Jenkins has always been a huge supporter of the AHS Band and it was quite the experience to finally put the pieces together in one spot.
Mr. Jenkins did two Zoom rehearsals with us in our Band Room, and took the train from Baltimore to join us throughout our trip. Our students got to hear, learn, and feel exactly what Mr. Jenkins was aiming to accomplish when he wrote this rendition, which is a rare experience in the Band world. To be able to play a piece in the way the composer wrote it, but also have a chance to collaborate with him on artistic choices, made the playing of this piece feel more authentic and genuine.
The messaging of Lift Every Voice And Sing includes themes of faith, perseverance, hope, and resilience, just to name a few. To experience what we experienced on this trip feels like this song was the most appropriate and fitting to perform. Without further ado, please enjoy "Lift Every Voice And Sing".
