The War on Cuba has ushered in a return of the hunger, thirst & despair that characterized Cuba before the Revolution. One direct consequence of the U.S. War on its neighbor has been the rise of alcoholism & addiction to “el kímiko.” Marginalized Cubans smoke synthetic chemicals (like MDMB-4en-PINACA) or horse tranquilizer in a “papelito” (rolling paper) to forget about the material reality of scarcity that stalks & haunts them. In some areas of Cuba, “the Cuban crack,” as I call it because of how cheap and accessible it is, is now a pandemic that has local youth in its grip.
I show these dehumanizing images not to kick Cuba when it’s down, but to educate. What is the material reality of an island nation the U.S. military is threatening to invade any day? How can a people subjected to 36 years of unfathomable scarcity caused by an Economic and Military Blockade, continue to survive, nevermind resist? It is also fair to ask: why doesn’t the evening news, el Noticiero Estelar, or the weekly newspapers like Granma, speak directly to these everyday struggles of the Cuban masses?
