What Should We Do When Prenatal Hydronephrosis is Diagnosed? 🩺👶🏻
Hearing the words “your baby has kidney enlargement” during pregnancy can be highly stressful for expectant parents. However, this condition—detected during the prenatal period—is actually one of the most common cases we manage in pediatric nephrology!
Known medically as Hydronephrosis, this enlargement can sometimes be caused by a mild narrowing of the urinary tract or vesicoureteral reflux (urine backing up from the bladder). The key here is not to panic, but to monitor the baby with the right clinical steps.
Today in our clinic, we discussed this very topic through the case of our lovely 3-month-old patient. Together with our 6th-year medical student, we reviewed the diagnosis pathways and management strategies. Watch the video for more details! 👇

Our paths crossed with Raslan from Tunisia during a very challenging period when he was experiencing serious complications after 2nd year of kidney transplant performed at another center. Thanks to the targeted treatments and close monitoring we implemented, we left those difficult days behind.
Now, Raslan visits us for regular check-ups. Seeing him grow healthily and, most importantly, seeing his smiling face is the greatest reward for us as physicians. As we always emphasize in medical education: standard post-transplant care and proper complication management are just as life-saving as the surgery itself.
