This piece went through several iterations. I really wanted to just make the Tower be completely defeated, but that felt a bit naive. I don’t know that I’ll ever live to see a world free of bigotry for trans and queer people. But I do know, from the path forged by my queer ancestors, that it can be washed away from sight, its power made void.

“Forbidden Magic” is a narrative told through six illustrations about the magic of transition and the journey to discovering yourself against the odds. I used symbolism from the Tarot as a foundation for telling this story, but the illustrations are not meant to directly represent the cards. (If you’d like to see me do the major arcana someday, lmk 👀) This project was completed during my final semester at Lesley this fall, and I’ve graduated with my BFA since January.
I’ll be posting each piece individually throughout this week, along with descriptions of what my thought process was while making it, so look forward to it!!!
