What is that even supposed to mean? A fridge-magnet version of empty pride? A public plea to be featured on Idiot Abroad?
To me, this is the opposite of what travel is meant to do to a person.
What did I observe in my travels? What did I discover about myself? What did I learn about people, and from them? What did food reveal about history, migration, power? What contradictions surfaced between a place’s past and its present?
These are the things I remember, and it's so much more than a number. There is plenty to see, but far more to observe and absorb. Being able to travel across the world is a privilege, yes, but it is also a responsibility. To use that privilege to speak about sustainability, climate change, habitats, and the magic of human connection is why I love travel writing.
Discovering as much about the world as about myself (and other human beings) beats travelling for Instagram bragging rights, every single time.

Beyond the floating lanterns in the sky and the floral offerings in the waters below, the festival is an expression of gratitude and hope. A prayerful crowd, paper kites and fairy lights, colourful slushies, and the aroma of mango sticky rice and fish cakes offered me a first, intimate glimpse of Thai life. A reminder that I had much to be grateful for, too.
