Pregnancy dramatically increases your demand for amino acids.
Not just for baby growth but for placenta development, blood volume expansion, hormone production, and blood sugar regulation.
Yet many women are told that two eggs, yogurt, or a smoothie is “enough.”
From a science standpoint, protein needs in pregnancy are higher than the standard recommendations most people hear.
The current RDA of 71 grams per day is the minimum to prevent deficiency, not necessarily the intake that supports optimal energy, stable blood sugar, or symptom management.
Emerging research suggests that many pregnant women feel and function better closer to 1.2 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, which often lands closer to 90 to 120 plus grams daily, depending on body size and activity level.
When protein intake is too low, the body adapts and symptoms show up.
Fatigue, nausea between meals, carb cravings, shakiness, brain fog, and energy crashes are often signs of under fueling, not pregnancy “just being hard.”
Protein works best when it is
🍗 included at every meal
🍳 evenly distributed throughout the day
🥣 paired with carbohydrates to slow digestion and support blood sugar
This is not about tracking macros or eating perfectly.
It is about meeting the biological demands of pregnancy.

Your body is doing one of the most metabolically demanding things it will ever do.
It deserves adequate fuel.
2. Get my iron checked and actually do something about it. Blood volume increases nearly 50% during pregnancy, and iron demand spikes in the third trimester. Going into birth with low stores is one of the biggest risk factors for postpartum hemorrhage complications and that brutal postpartum exhaustion nobody warns you about. I wish I had been more intentional about iron-rich foods AND pairing them with vitamin C to maximize absorption.
3. Spend a weekend doing a massive freezer meal prep. Because the last thing you want to think about with a newborn is cooking. Nourishing yourself postpartum directly impacts your milk supply, energy, and recovery and no one is going to feed you the way you’d feed yourself.
Past me needed to hear this. Maybe current you does too 🤍

Spoiler. There’s nothing wrong with you. Your meals just aren’t built to hold you.
Here’s what’s actually happening. Most pregnant women are eating “healthy” foods like yogurt, fruit, smoothies, toast, and salads, but the meals are heavy on carbs and light on protein and fat. So your body burns through them fast, your blood sugar crashes, and 90 minutes later you’re starving again. It feels like your body is constantly demanding food, but really it’s just demanding the RIGHT food.
The fix is honestly so simple. Every meal needs three things: protein, fat, and a complex carb. When all three are on the plate, your blood sugar stays steady, your hunger calms down, and you stop feeling like a bottomless pit. It’s not about eating more. It’s about eating in ratios your pregnant body can actually use.
Quick examples:
Smoothie alone → smoothie plus eggs on the side.
Toast alone → toast plus avocado plus eggs.
Yogurt and fruit → yogurt and fruit plus nuts and a piece of cheese.
Salad with chicken → salad with chicken plus rice plus olive oil.
Same foods. Just built up.
You’re not greedy. You’re not failing. You’re just under fueled in ways nobody explained to you.
Comment FREE and I’ll send you my 7-day pregnancy meal plan. Every meal is built in the right ratios so you stop crashing, stop crying in the pantry, and actually feel full. Zero mental load required.
Save this for the next time you’re starving 90 minutes after eating and thinking something is wrong with you. Send it to the friend who keeps saying “I’m just SO hungry all the time and I don’t know why.” 💛
Crashing at 2pm? Breakfast is too low in protein. Starving 90 minutes after eating? Missing fat. Constipated? Low water, low fiber, and probably the wrong iron form in your prenatal. Wild cravings? Unstable blood sugar. Leg cramps? Magnesium and potassium. Exhausted no matter what? Likely iron or protein. Brain fog? Choline and DHA. Mood swings? Blood sugar and B vitamins.
The good news, this means most of what you’re suffering through isn’t “just pregnancy.” It’s communication. Your body is telling you exactly where the gaps are. And once you fix the fuel, most of these symptoms get dramatically better, often within a week. You don’t have to white knuckle your way through pregnancy hoping it gets better. You can actually feel good.
Comment PLAN and I’ll send you my 6 week pregnancy meal plan ebook. Every meal is built to fix the most common nutrition gaps and steady your energy, all without you doing the math or googling at midnight.
Save this for the next time you’re not sure why you feel off. Send it to the friend who keeps saying “I just feel terrible and I don’t know why.” It’s almost always fixable 🩵
high protein. high fiber. dairy free. and it takes literally 5 minutes to throw together the night before.
chia seeds are one of those ingredients that quietly do SO much for you.. omega-3s, gut-healthy fiber, steady energy, and they keep you full for hours. Pair them with a good quality protein powder and you’ve got a snack that actually works as hard as you do.
no weird ingredients. no complicated steps. just real food that fuels you. 🤍
⬇️ comment PUDDING and I’ll send you the full recipe straight to your DMs!
Here’s what to actually look for on the label:
✅ Choline — at least 200 mg (most prenatals skip this entirely)
✅Vitamin D — 1000 IU or more
✅ Methylated folate — NOT folic acid
✅ Iron — listed separately so you can adjust your dose
✅ DHA/EPA — sold separately from your multi
✅ Magnesium bisglycinate — the form that actually absorbs
✅ Multi-dose serving — because you can’t fit all of this into one pill
If your current prenatal doesn’t check these boxes, it might be time for an upgrade 🤍

Not even with twins. Not even on hospital bed rest 😫
Every provider said the same thing: “Just take a prenatal.”
That was it.
I never told them I was a dietitian—because I wanted to be treated like any other patient.
But what I realized? Most pregnant women are being left in the dark when it comes to nutrition, especially in high-risk pregnancies.
That experience changed everything for me.
Today, I help women feel empowered, prepared, and deeply supported through personalized, evidence-based care. Because you deserve more than “just take a prenatal.”
