10 years ago, I was devastated when I was told repeatedly that I wouldn’t get in to medical school. Not only was I told that I wouldn’t get in, I was told to look at other degrees in healthcare to pursue. Luckily, I wasn’t ready to give up on my dream and had a support system that always had my back.
Now, I’m going to be an attending in less than 6 months. I’m… almost done with residency. The advisor who told me that I had no chance can call me Dr. Pilla today.
Morals of the story: Don’t let someone tell you that you can’t accomplish something if they haven’t done it themselves. Don’t let a stranger determine your potential. Failure IS an option, but giving up isn’t.

A while ago, I met some of Josh’s attorney colleagues for the first time. Throughout the evening, one guy made several pointed comments implying that I was some sort of trophy wife. At least a few “you must feel so lucky that you bagged a lawyer, huh?”, “aren’t you glad you caught him before he got the JD”, “do you love bragging about how you’re marrying an attorney?”, etc.
Josh heard one of his little comments, calmly leaned in, and said “Dude. She’s a doctor.”
No argument needed and that man has not made eye contact with me since then.
I didn’t feel like it was worth any acknowledgement at the time, but from time to time, I still remember the guy aggressively insinuating that I went to college for an MRS degree and should be so grateful that a big, bad lawyer paid me any attention and it makes me cackle. In the words of Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., “real Gs move in silence like lasagna”.

When I graduated med school and was about to start residency, I was FILLED with doubt. I didn’t think I’d be a good doctor because I didn’t do so well on boards and I was positive that I’d hate living in Oklahoma. Wrong on both counts, thank goodness.
Medicine in real life is nothing like boards and not being the shining star of your med school doesn’t mean that you won’t be a great physician! The first few months of residency are the BIGGEST learning curve, but I found myself so much happier in residency than I was in med school. I also performed much much better as a resident than I ever did as a med student. I finally feel like I’ve come into myself as a grown up.
I also thought I would dislike Oklahoma, but Tulsa ended up being such a hidden gem. I didn’t expect to love it here, but I do. Living in a smaller city has actually been a lot of fun and it reminds me so much of Austin back in my college days 🥹
If you’re nervous about starting residency, remember that everyone else is too. Walk in knowing that you are facing an entirely new experience and you have time to learn and grow. This is a fresh start!

I am just so so grateful today for all of the love, support, and sacrifice that it took to get to this point. My parents made this dream possible and I am truly blessed for that. Residency has been more amazing than I could have hope for and I owe it all to my Giants who always encouraged my big dreams 🫶🏾
Initially, I was nervous about ending up with someone outside of my culture. I grew up speaking Telugu, eating dosas, and very proud of being Desi. I was scared of losing that part of myself. What I absolutely didn’t expect was to end up in an interracial relationship with a man who is a fiend for my mom’s cooking, gets excited about every Indian holiday/party, and supports me in every aspect of my identity. Interracial relationships are beautiful, but they have to be built on a strong foundation of respect.
The engagement party that my parents threw for us was truly magical and I am so very excited to start planning our big, beautiful Indian wedding! Seeing my family also fall in love with Josh and accept him as one of us was so special and my heart is truly full 🥹
Don’t settle for any less than the man who will dance in front of 200 people just because it would make you happy 💛💛💛
