That is the first thing Wild asks of you. Someone meets you there, takes your bags, and you walk the last fifteen minutes up through the orchard on your own two feet. Somewhere on that climb the signal drops and you stop reaching for your phone. By the time the house comes into view, at seven thousand feet above Jana, held in oak and deodar, you are already quieter than you were at the bottom.
The house was built by hand. Stone on stone, wood and mud, the old Kathkuni way the mountains have used for a few hundred years. Some of what happens inside it fits in a frame. A lot of it does not. The cold that comes off the ridge at first light. A whole room full of woodsmoke. The heat of the sauna sitting in your chest right before you step into the cold plunge and forget, for one second, your own name.
There is a fire for the ones who want to sit still, and a safari into Kais Wildlife Sanctuary for the ones who want to go looking. The rooms are named after the sky. Moonhouse. Twilight. Sunroom. And when the light goes, the whole valley goes dark the way it used to go dark everywhere, and the Milky Way climbs up over the mountains like it was waiting for you to finally look up.
People do not come to Wild to escape. They come to disappear for a few days and remember something they forgot they were carrying. You go home lighter. That is the whole point.
You will find us above Jana Village in Kullu, Himachal. Past Cafe Nightingale, twelve kilometres up Jana Road, and then the last stretch on foot.
Two nights, minimum. That is about how long it takes to let go.
