The tanpura is a fretless, long-necked Indian string instrument that originated from the ancient instrument called โ Tumburu Vina โ around 300 B.C. and evolved during the Mughal era through Arab-Persian influences.
It has 4 strings and is used exclusively as an acoustic drone in Indian classical music, and for us westerners also for Bhajans and Kirtan. It provides a continuous meditative harmonic anchor that establishes the base tonic pitch (Sa) and overtones.
There are two kinds, a male and female vocal tanpura which differ size, string thickness, and tuning pitch, and are customized to match the natural octave differences between male and female singing voices. It can be played standing vertically or also horizontally. I like using it vertically.
โจSound healing use: since itโs a string instrument, it can be used for the heart chakra, even more beautifully if you add a soft voice or chant to the performance. I like also using it also during intro or closing of a sound journey, as the drone sound promotes relaxation and deep meditation.
โจMy female tanpura is tuned to G, G#, A, or A#. The exact notes for the standard tuning of a 4-string tanpura are Pa - Sa - Sa - Sa.
โจKirtan usage: during Kirtan sessions, it is really nice to include it while chanting soft mantras; or even when you wish to improvise with your voice as is a great support for having a foundation SA drone continuously on the background. When played along with the harmonium or other instruments, it is advisable to have it amplified, as the harmoniumโs sound is too loud and could drown down its sound.

They originated in the Himalayas of Nepal and India, before spreading to Tibet, China, Japan, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Egypt, and the Americas.
Some people say the Tibetan bowls date to a pre-Buddhist religion called Bon-Po ( Natives of Tibet). Other people say that they came along with Buddhism in Tibet; that monks and lamas used these bowls for sacred rituals to evoke sacred sounds and mantras for prayer and meditation, and that they always kept it a guarded secret through generations.
With the predominant use of bells in Hindu sacred rituals and for chants, we can maybe assume the Himalayas of Northern India were the birthplace of standing bells. Moreover, Hinduism, which shares a lot with Buddhism, believes the universe was created from โsound,โ - AUM.
However there are other stories that speak of them coming from China, Japan or even ancient Mesopotamia.
Whether singing bowls came from Tibet, Nepal, India, China, or Japan - they are used in modern times for producing therapeutic brain waves, ideal of healing and meditation ๐๐ชท
