Portrait miniatures are IN in 2026 according to Wicked Director Jon M Chu!
🫧
While brooches were all over the red carpet, there were two in particular that caught everyone’s eye — these beaded masterpieces by.
🫧
nerdbead took specific inspiration from the Roman tradition of micromosaics, but this commission also represents a return to the original sentiments of portrait miniatures.
🫧
In the past, women have openly worn portrait miniatures of loved ones to display their affection towards the person (see images 3-4).
🫧
In wearing these beaded portraits of two women he cares deeply for, Director Jon M Chu has done the very same, expressing his admiration for Actresses Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
🫧
These brooches are an innovative 21st-century adaptation of portrait miniatures that shows wearable art has always been in fashion.

In this pastel drawing of a family at the the theatre, Mrs. Matthiew Matty (far left) gently holds a portrait miniature of a man with brown hair in contemporary blue dress.
🎭
While artist Charles Hayter ) did paint full-scale portraits in pastels and oils, he also worked in miniatures, so this composition was well suited to how skill set.
🎭
It might seem peculiar that Mr. Matthiew Matty, the patriarch of this group is not present at this large family gathering. Perhaps he had died, and the artist or patron decided to include him via portrait miniature.

In 2018 I flew to Vienna to see this very miniature with as we were researching a newly discovered portrait miniature of King Henri III of France for an article for. We had read many things about this portrait - it was by Nicholas Hilliard and depicted Henri’s brother, François-
Hercule, Duc d’Anjou, and was painted sometime between 1577–
1582 (watercolour on vellum laid
down on card, 5.8 × 4.9 cm.
Collection of
Museum, Vienna.
One of the reasons we had to travel to Vienna was that it was too delicate to move - so it was was not going to appear in ‘s 2019 exhibition celebrating the careers of Nicholas Hilliard and Isaac Oliver.
But one of the most intriguing things we read about this miniature was that Hilliard had included Anjou’s pox scars in his portrait.
As William Aslet later wrote in an article which appeared in journal ‘A marriage between Anjou and Elizabeth had first been proposed in 1572. It has been assumed
that Hilliard was sent to France by Elizabeth, who did not trust French artists, to record an accurate likeness of the duke, who had been left severely scarred following an outbreak of smallpox as a youth.’ But at the point of Hilliard reaching Paris, the potential betrothal had once again stalled.
Both Elizabeth and the duc had suffered from the serious disease of smallpox in their youths - Elizabeth was expected to die but she recovered unscathed. The duc was not so lucky and was left permanently scarred and disfigured by the disease, with a pitted face and a slightly deformed spine. His birth name, Hercule (Hercules), which means strong, was considered a poor fit after the illness, and he changed it to Francis upon his confirmation.
So what did we see in this miniature by Hilliard? Although we could see under magnification some pitting on the surface, we concluded this was more likely water damage than Hilliard’s truthful portrayal of the scarred man in his 20s (yes, he was 22 years younger than Elizabeth!). We did feel, however, that there was an attempt to show that his skin was damaged. Hilliard walking that fine line between truth and flattery.
If you had wandered down to Holborn Conduit ‘next to the Sunne Taverne’ at the bottom of Snow Hill in London in the mid 1600s, you would have found the print seller Robert Peake. He was following in big shoes - his grandfather, Robert Peake ), became Serjeant-Painter to Elizabeth I and died in the same year as Nicholas Hilliard, her favoured artist.

His son, William, called his son Robert after his celebrated grandfather. Robert inherited his father's print business (In a letter to Samuel Pepys written in 1690, John Evelyn remembered that Peake was the dealer 'who had the most choice' of prints in London) and his grandfather's aspirations to become artist to the crown.

However, this miniature, signed in gold, appears to be the ONLY extant work by Robert - proudly signed in gold with his initials and dated to the 1660s after the joyous Restoration of Charles II. It seems that while Robert was excellent at selling prints, he could not make a living as an artist.

For the first #fashionfriday of the year we are showing this highly fashionable gentleman of 2026...ooops, we meant 1785...
Listening to curators talking to this week on a talk discussing the current show - 'Renaissance to Runway: The Enduring Italian Houses' - made us pause to think about how a miniature we just added to our website showcased so many of the fashions of now. in particular, is positioning cravats, waistcoats, brooches and embroidery for men as everyday - also referencing 18th century colours, such as this lilac hue - as well as Georgian fashion idiosyncrasies such as leaving the lower buttons of your waistcoat or jacket undone (to show either your embroidered waistcoat or to make the tight garment more comfortable).
There is no doubt that our mysterious miniature sitter Mr R (note his brooch or tie-pin) would have been considered highly fashionable in his day, but he could also have sauntered down the Dior catwalk recently and not looked out of place...

Ahead of a fleeting visit to New York later this month, I thought I would look at some of the impressive portrait miniatures held and this one caught my eye...it portrays Elizabeth "Betsy" Patterson Bonaparte and is attributed to Thomas Sully (1783–1872) who has miniaturised Gilbert Stuart's oil of the same subject (circa 1804).
The woman in the portrait was Elizabeth Patterson, the daughter of a Baltimore Merchant. She was 17 when she met the 19 year old Jerome Bonaparte - brother of Napoleon- who was on the run after a minor skirmish in the Caribbean, where he had fired a warning shot over a British ship but accidentally hit the rigging.
It was love at first sight between the teenagers, with Elizabeth declaring “I would rather be the wife of Jerome Bonaparte for an hour than the wife of any other man for a lifetime.”
However, their marriage was hailed an international incident, a suggestion that America and France might be allied. Betsy and Jerome instantly became the most famous couple in America. Napoleon heard of his brother’s elopement during the couple's honeymoon, and immediately declared it null and void.
Threatened with being disinherited, Jerome travelled with Betsy to Lisbon, where he left her to travel to meet with his brother. She would not see him again for thirty years, giving birth to their son Jerome (known as 'Bo') alone.
Not one to take this abandonment lightly, she petitioned Napoleon for a pension: “Tell him that Madame Bonaparte is ambitious and demands her rights as a member of the imperial family.” Forcibly divorced from Jerome, she travelled between Europe and America, investing her small pension to provide for her son's education in Geneva and then Harvard.
Clearly strong, intelligent and brave, she was perhaps too multi-faceted to be captured on one plane alone - instead we have her in three dynamic poses both in oil and miniature.

Watch until the end to find out more about our big discovery...

For the last eight months, we've been researching an exciting new discovery with the help of - this portrait miniature of Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, by Nicholas Hilliard. From today, you can read the full story of this discovery right now on the Guardian online (see our stories for link), and from tomorrow in the Times Literary Supplement.

Southampton was known for his androgynous looks, shown here in the typical female fashions he wears. His beauty was both celebrated and mocked by those at the late Elizabethan court. He was also the young man to whom Shakespeare dedicated Venus & Adonis (1593) and The Rape of Lucrece (1594), and is thought to be the most likely candidate for the 'Fair youth' of Shakespeare's sonnets.

When the conservator,, first opened the miniature, the reverse was rather surprising. Usually, a miniature like this one from the 1590s would be painted on vellum laid on a playing card, but here, the heart suit of the playing card had been deliberately obscured by a spear.

But why had the heart been defaced? It seems that the recipient of the miniature may have been a lover, spurned by Southampton's marriage to Elizabeth Vernon in 1598. The young Earl was known to have male lovers, and only one candidate had a spear in their name and coat of arms...

This must remain a theory, and there is no way to prove that Shakespeare ever held this miniature. However, this discovery of a miniature by Hilliard provides new evidence that could help to unravel this 430-year-old mystery.

Breaking news! Story by Richard Brooks in The Observer today reveals how Emma Rutherford discovered a new portrait of Mary I as Princess in the current exhibition (first image). Do read the story today if you can but extras for history nerds out there include the additional evidence that a photograph from the 1930s shows that the Compton Verney portrait was once in the same collection as a portrait of her mother, Katherine of Aragon (now Private Collection) and another portrait of Mary herself as princess when betrothed to Emperor Charles V (now National Portrait Gallery) - note also the identical frames. The latter two were on display at the recent #sixlives exhibition. Thrilled to have made this discovery which was backed with compelling evidence and insights from my colleagues and as well as Dr Peter Stiffel. More to be revealed on forthcoming podcasts including #notjustthetudors on with Professor Susannah Lipscombe #portraitdiscovery #comptonverney #bloodymary
