The wet season here in Florida is perfect for emulating the consistently wet and extremely humid rainforest conditions of Costa Rica & Panama that this species is endemic to. This plant is on a roll, having produced two stunning leaves in less than two weeks. It's shocking how fast these enormous & extraordinary Monstera can grow in their ideal climate

Monstera filamentosa possesses one of those extraordinarily rare emergents that looks less like a leaf and more like living botanical architecture. Carved almost to the midrib with impossibly deep, skeletal, filamentous fenestrations, each new leaf hangs like a suspended jungle lattice, solely supported by ribbons of tissue so delicate and improbable that it appears otherworldly. What makes this species even more striking is the transformation of the emergent itself, unfurling a bright translucent gold before gradually shifting through cool teal tones and finally hardening into deep green. Both fresh and hardened leaves possess beautifully-raised & structural bullate texture that captures light across every surface and filament, depicted here in this clip. As a bonus, the deciduous petiolar sheaths are pink-orange & inflorescences are electric pink. Few Monstera possess this combination of alien structure, emergent color progression & texture, appearing as if it was intricately sculpted

Vantablack at it again with another stunning emergent! This particular plant is notable for its consistent expression of ultra-dark lamina from initial expansion through hardening with every leaf, presenting extreme anthocyanin saturation from the earliest stage of emergence. Unlike most dressleri-influenced hybrids that emerge bronze, red-orange or olive before darkening, this cross presents near-black immediately upon unfurling and retains that oily, inky, light-absorbing intensity through hardening. Exactly what we were chasing with this cross, this plant exceeded all of my expectations!

It's about time I post some botanical art again! Here's all of the most recently-described Monstera species, including scherberichii (which wasn't published yet, but was announced at IAS 2024). Nearly all the species featured in this piece are found in Panama which, alongside Costa Rica, is a hotbed of Monstera biodiversity. Several of these obscure and beautiful new species are similar/closely related to previously-described species (lamersiana & filamentosa, cedenoi & oreophila, panamensis & molinae, scherberichii & obliqua, colossica & titanum, corana & buseyi), but differ in numerous fundamental ways that warranted & required description. This piece (and many other obscure Monstera illustrations) wouldn't be possible without the incredible work of, who described many of the species featured here and is the namesake for Monstera cedenoi. Not to mention that this species was only recently formally described, so available information is nearly nonexistent. Wanted to draw out this stunning, enigmatic Anthurium for a very long time. Depicting that mind-blowing hyper-velvety texture was quite a challenge, so hoping I could do this incredible plant some justice. Anthurium dressleri is a Panamanian endemic that grows in tropical, wet, low-elevation & premontane forest. The best clones of this species possess striking emergents that can be quite variable depending on the accession; generally, they emerge a brilliant burnt sienna and harden off pitch black, occasionally lightening up to a deep green as the leaf ages. The leaves possess a micropapillose texture that is visible in the form of a near translucent, velvety teal sheen across the adaxial surface of the leaf. This is incredibly beneficial in high humidity environments, as it allows for easy & rapid fluid movement & prevents water damage. The main plant illustrated in this piece is an incredibly dark specimen of Rio Guanche ecotype dressleri. Below, 4 emergents of different cultivated clones are shown at different stages of emergence (none of those are hardened off). These notable clones include JV’s Rio Guanche F2 Dark form, SKG’s type locality clone (Colón, Panama), NSE Tropicals’ clone & Windy Aubrey’s clone.
