They are incredibly adaptable, equally at home moving through dense vegetation, along riverbanks or straight into the water. This moment was a great example of that a jaguar jumping down the riverbank and straight into the water, making it look completely effortless.
The Pantanal is a constantly changing environment, and jaguars have learned to make the most of it. They are powerful swimmers, excellent hunters and incredibly well adapted to life around the rivers.
Watching them move through this landscape is a reminder of just how perfectly suited they are to the Pantanal.

Cruising along this river, I’ve found myself thinking back over the last few months grateful for all the incredible wildlife encounters, beautiful memories, new friendships, and, of course, some photographs along the way.
It’s already early October, with Uganda coming up in November and South Africa in December. I’m excited for the weeks ahead, and there are plenty of great trips and plans already taking shape for 2027.

I love everything about this island — the landscapes, the wildlife, the unpredictability, and most of all, the memories it has given me over the years.

But, of course, the king of the Pantanal is the jaguar.
There are more people here than there used to be, and yes, there are other boats out on the river. But just like me, these people are here because they want to experience this incredible place and see its wildlife in its natural environment.
And I believe that can be a good thing.
Tourism, when done responsibly, can help create a reason to protect these areas and the wildlife that depends on them. We all have a role to play in looking after places like this.
The Pantanal is truly one of the few places in the world where you can observe jaguars in their natural environment, and that is something worth protecting.
The more we understand, appreciate and value this incredible ecosystem, the more to protect!
