Assembling a diverse group of queer young people cast from streets, parks, agencies, through connections and word of mouth, Henket recruited Mexico City-born stylist and Willy Chavarria collaborator to help bring his nonconformist vision to life.
The result is a series of delineated black-and-white portraits with costuming that blends recognisable Mexican symbols – serapes, football kits, a Luchador mask – with operatic flare in the shape of horns, balloons, chaps, corsets and outsized silhouettes.

C’est pourtant une découverte fondatrice: le vêtement est un outil de liberté et d’expression identitaire d’une formidable puissance.
«Birds of Mexico», nouvel ouvrage paru aux éditions Damiani, explore les mêmes fondements. Photographe de mode (et sorti du placard depuis), Pieter Henket prend en 2021, après le Covid et sa période d’étouffant isolement, ses quartiers dans l’électrique capitale mexicaine. Contrarié par l’affirmation répandue que «la jeunesse, c’était mieux avant», il invite les esprits libres à poser dans un superbe atelier, devant des lumières de peinture flamande.
Cette fois, le travail sera collectif ou ne sera pas. Il encourage, styliste renommé, et son équipe de créateurs queer à poser leur patte sur ses chimères.

Des masques de lutteurs cohabitent avec des chaps de cowboys, des madones légèrement vêtues font face à d’effrayants dieux indigènes, latex, cuir et motifs panthères épousent allègrement des corps à la diversité marquée.
La poétesse, quant à elle, est venue aider chaque individu à formuler une prose qui vient compléter les portraits. Elle pose aussi ses propres mots dans l’ouvrage, notamment cette parabole: «Tu ne pourras distinguer la nuit du jour que lorsque tu te verras reflété dans les yeux de l’autre, car sinon, quelle que soit l’heure, ce sera toujours la nuit pour toi.»

After five years of allot of hard work, Birds of Mexico City is finally about to take flight. In just a few weeks, the book will arrive in stores worldwide, and seeing the press response so far has been deeply emotional for all of us involved.
What began as an idea when we traveled to Mexico City slowly became something much bigger than I could have imagined. The project moved through many layers and transformations, carried by countless conversations, moments of vulnerability, trust, creativity, laughter, intensity, and love.
People often only see the finished image, but behind a body of work like this stands an entire community of people giving parts of themselves to make something meaningful together. This project would not exist without the generosity, openness, and spirit of the incredible young people who allowed us to see them and celebrate them exactly as they are.
Today I want to share a moment that makes me incredibly proud.
Birds of Mexico City was featured in The Guardian with a beautiful story written by centered around “La Mujer,” my portrait of — an image that became one of the emotional hearts of the series.
More than anything, I feel grateful.
Grateful to every person who stood in front of the camera, every collaborator behind the scenes.

This project took a village, many people bringing their talent, generosity, and passion to make it possible. For me, a project is never only about the final images. It is about the process: creating space for young people, giving them a voice, and building platforms where their creativity and individuality can be seen.
Birds of Mexico City is a celebration of freedom of spirit. The photographs were created together with a new generation of Mexican creatives, dancers, performers and artists who express themselves with courage and beauty in a world that often asks them to conform.
Young people are going through a complicated moment. So much feels uncertain. My hope is that this book offers a little bit of joy, a reminder that there is power in imagination, community, and in simply being unapologetically yourself.
Thank you to everyone who helped bring this book into the world.
