I&J reached out to me while I was in Japan, and we ended up creating these fun themed photos together. Honestly, shoots like this always remind me how much I enjoy stepping outside the usual couple photos box and creating something a little different 🤭
For creative shoots like these, artificial lighting plays such a huge role in bringing the mood to life. A lot of the colour, contrast, and atmosphere simply wouldn’t be possible without it.
So if you’re learning photography, I’d highly recommend getting comfortable with flash and other artificial light sources. They can completely transform your images once you know how to use them ✨

1. Open your photo in Affinity and make sure you’re in the “Pixel Persona”
2. Select the “Object Selection Tool” (3rd icon from the top on the left toolbar).
3. Click on the subject you want to stretch and let Affinity select it. Once selected, press “Command + J” to duplicate the subject onto a new layer.
4. Click on the new subject layer you just created.
5. Select the “Selection Frame Tool” (4th icon from the top on the left toolbar) and draw a rectangle over the area you want to stretch.
6. Press “Command + J”again. This will create a new layer containing only the rectangle selection.
7. In the Layers panel on the right, drag the rectangle layer *below* the duplicated subject layer. This keeps your subject sitting cleanly on top of the stretch effect.
8. Click on the rectangle layer to make sure it’s selected.
9. Select the “Move Tool” (1st icon on the left toolbar). Hold “Shift”, then drag the rectangle outward to stretch the pixels.
✨ Optional: Creating the warped effect
10. Make sure you’re still on the rectangle layer.
11. Press “Command + D” to deselect the current selection.
12. Click the “hourglass icon”on the right panel (under the Layers tab).
13. Scroll down and choose “Mesh Warp”. This should now make your rectangle selection from blue to white with points. Like in the beginning of this video.
14. Drag the mesh points around to bend and distort the stretched pixels into any shape you’d like.
That’s it! It can be a bit overwhelming if you’ve never done it before. It took me about an hr to figure it out but once I did, it was so fun and easy☺️ Have fun experimenting!

There’s just something about grain that makes a photo feel a little more nostalgic 🤭

For this session, I got to capture both photos and video for M&B’s engagement, which made it even more special.
We wanted to focus more on movement and atmosphere rather than heavily posed photos, so the entire time I was thinking about scenes from classic rom-com movies 🤭
I love creating photos that feel less like a photoshoot and more like stills from a film you’ll want to revisit over and over again. And having those photos alongside a video set to their song makes the whole gallery feel even more personal, like their very own film.
So happy with how these turned out, and I can’t wait to capture more love stories this year 🤍

Now that I am a full-time photographer, I’ve realised it’s not really about knowing how to get there, it’s more about just starting. I think we’re lucky to live in an age where social media is so accessible. We already have a way to showcase our work to strangers, so all we need to do is put in the work and show what we’re capable of.
These five things definitely helped me get to where I am today, but my biggest advice is: just start. We figure out the rest later!

I still think about a few years ago, when I had just moved to Australia. I was so lonely and honestly didn’t know what to do with myself, so I just kept shooting, creating, and doing my own thing.
And now, somehow, I’ve met so many beautiful people from all over the world who share the same passion for creativity, and photography is what connected all of us.
It still amazes me how these tiny still moments can bring people together like this🥹

This year, I really want to focus on growing my photography business!
I didn’t share this publicly last year, but I quit my corporate job last April to go all in on photography, without any backup plan.
If you’re thinking of doing the same, I’d probably say: If your work situation is great, it’s better to stay in your current job, use that income to invest in your photography business, and see how it goes. I would have done the same, but I was completely burnt out from my last job and already thinking of taking a career break for a year, so that’s what I ended up doing.
It was definitely stressful, dipping into savings while investing in gear, trying to break into the industry, and figuring out what I really wanted to do with my life.
But I think 2026 will be the year I work hard on my photography business and create work that I’m proud of ☺️ I’m excited to share the process and everything I learn along the way.

Introducing Senpo (千歩)! In Japanese, this means “thousand steps.” The Sen (千) is part of how my name is written in Japanese, and po (歩) means “walk.” So together, it translates to “Chi-Walk” 😆
It’s also inspired by the word Sanpo (散歩), which means “walk” in Japanese. I just played around with the words a bit. A while back, I asked how we should name our photo walks, and many of you suggested including my name. That idea, combined with the concept of photo walks, led to Senpo!
Honestly, I’m a little nervous announcing this, but my hope is that Senpo becomes a warm and welcoming community where creatives can connect, find inspiration, and encourage each other on their journeys.
Our first official photo walk of the year will be in February, and I can’t wait to see some of you there!
