Swam more inside to see if a deeper position šŸ“ø would yield better perspective on the shape of this section, bigger day—nothing critical. The waves breaking earlier than anticipated, offshores weakening equated to less than ideal shape.

We persist and try again.

Always striving for more light. For this campaign we were sent to with and our bus. This was August; the halcyon peak of summer and the formative days of our creative agency, months before we officially launched. Here’s what we came back with.

Timeless Day Creative. August, 2025.
Pockets of warm water from the Marine Room to the Cove but ended up with 🄶 stiff hands after a long swim.

Managed to meet up with šŸŠā€ā™‚ļø 🤿 to search for some clear water between the lull and tide drop. Some clips from my pov and photos from his. Business as usual here.
Monochrome moments from the crucible sidelines.

Short, crossed up sections that day lead to more backside views than I’d have preferred the amount of swimming needed. Made a b line to try and capture a few dolphins in the lineup, only to swim right into a rip.

Might as well grab a few shots on the long swim back šŸŠā€ā™‚ļø
Never enough ā˜€ļø

I don’t actively pursue street photography anymore:
The idea that photographers ā€˜make moments’ might be the most overused myth in photography. That notion has left an acrid aftertaste in my mouth, worse than a warm Negroni.

(I’m not talking about composition techniques. We’re examining ego.)

A lot of street photography discourse revolves around timing, instinct, bravadoā€”ā€œI saw it before anyone else did.ā€ As if the presence of the camera somehow authored the scene. As if the moment needed us to exist.

It didn’t.

The moment was already there—unbothered, unfolding, complete—with or without a photographer standing ten feet away hoping to claim it.

That’s what draws me more toward surf photography these days than the street. Waves don’t perform. The ocean doesn’t care who’s watching. A surfer doesn’t wait for permission from a lens to feel something real. You either witness it, or you miss it.

Photography, at least to me, isn’t about intervention.
It’s about reverence.

The second we believe we created the moment, we’ve already misunderstood it.

Curious where others land on this—
Do photographers make moments?
Or do we just show up humble enough to recognize them?

Don’t misunderstand me—I still find street photography to be one of the most important contributions to art and our ability to understanding the human condition.

(If you make it about yourself, you aren’t invited to the post session Negronis.)
Started my year out shooting with a friend and really setting the tone for the year, highlighting some rather lofty goals.

Midway through the year, I left the corporate world to just work on my own creative endeavors and checked off my first goal of spending more time in the water/ to do more of things I love.

2025 brought great fortune and pleasure for me to create fun things with old and new friends, and to leverage my old creative ways for those looking to learn. I’ve been minding my g damn business, and it has been lovely as fuck.
Why do people hate Mondays so much? It is just another chance to try it all again.

Sparkles ✨ before the 🌊 šŸ’„
I’ll still see you through the water spots.

Sharing this reel as a little intro for all the new faces here—welcome! The ocean is more than just a backdrop—it’s my occasional office. Every day that I can, I’m in the water, capturing the raw energy and unique moments that define surf culture. Whether it’s an early morning session or chasing golden hour waves, my focus is on telling the stories of surfers and their connection to the ocean.

I’m Phillip Hernandez, a San Diego-based surf and travel photographer. If you’re into surf photography, surf travel, or just life on the water, let’s connect & create.

If we’re already connected—thanks for sticking around.
Another violent beauty.

Impatience. Impatient to post. Compelled by the urge to move—often into the wrong place. Paid the price for some shots this afternoon. Only had a small window of light after booking it to the beach after work.

Worth it. #myleicaphoto
